SCAM ALERT โ FAMILY EMERGENCY IMPOSTOR SCAM
Yuma Police Department Warning
The Yuma Police Department is warning residents about a scam targeting elderly members of our
community.
How the Scam Worked
An elderly resident received a telephone call from someone claiming to be a Denver County Public
Defender.
The caller falsely claimed that the victimโs grandson:
โ Had been involved in a traffic accident
โ Had been arrested
โ Needed money for bail
Believing her grandson was in trouble, the victim gathered the requested money and placed it inside a
box.
The suspect then arranged for a courier to come directly to the victimโs residence and pick up the
package. The package was later transported to a location that remains under investigation.
The suspect contacted the victim again and requested additional money. The caller claimed the money
was needed for restitution because another person had been injured in the alleged accident.
Warning Signs
Be cautious if a caller:
โ Demands money for a family memberโs arrest, bail, legal fees, medical expenses, or restitution
โ Claims to be an attorney, public defender, law enforcement officer, court employee, or other official
โ Pressures you to act immediately
โ Tells you not to contact family members or law enforcement
โ Sends a courier or delivery driver to your home to collect money or a package
Scammers may know the names of your children or grandchildren and other personal information. This
can make their story sound convincing.
What You Should Do
If someone claims that a family member has been arrested or injured:
1. Hang up.
2. Contact the family member directly using a trusted telephone number.
3. Contact another trusted relative or friend.
4. Verify the information independently with the agency, jail, court, or attorneyโs office.
5. Do not use a telephone number provided by the caller.
6. Do not provide money, personal information, or access to financial accounts.
7. Do not meet with or give a package to a courier.
Remember
Legitimate law enforcement agencies, courts, and attorneys will not send a courier to your residence to
collect cash for bail or restitution.
Report the Scam
If you receive a similar call:
โ Do not provide money or personal information.
โ Do not give a package to a courier.
โ Contact your local law enforcement agency to report the incident.
Please share this warning with family members, friends, caregivers, and elderly or vulnerable members
of our community. A short conversation about this scam may prevent someone from becoming a victim.
