World Food Day 2026

Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow 🍎🐟

The Environmental Health Division was honored to participate in the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ World Food Day Market and Fair, celebrated under the theme “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow.”

In her remarks, the Chief Environmental Health Officer highlighted the vital role of environmental health in promoting food safety, sustainability, availability, and security in the Virgin Islands.

Key messages included the importance of safe food handling, protecting water and environmental resources, reducing food waste, and embracing innovative practices to strengthen our food systems. She also emphasized that food security is not simply about having enough food, but ensuring reliable access to safe, nutritious food.

Achieving this requires collaboration among farmers, fishers, food businesses, government, and consumers. Everyone has a role to play in building a sustainable and resilient food system for present and future generations.

Remember: If it is not safe, it is not food. There is no food security without food safety!

STORE CLEANING CHEMICALS SAFELY!

Cleaning products help maintain hygienic schools, daycares, and other shared facilities—but improper storage can put children and staff at risk.

🧴 Keep cleaning chemicals in their original, labelled containers.

🔒 Store them in a secure area, out of children’s reach.

🚫 Never mix cleaning products, especially bleach with ammonia or acids.

🧹 Keep chemicals separate from food, drinking water, and food-preparation areas.

A clean environment must also be a safe environment!

Flies in food preparation areas are more than a nuisance.

They:

✅ transfer microorganisms from waste and contaminated surfaces onto food and food-contact surfaces.

✅ eat solid food by spitting or vomiting digestive juices onto it to melt it into a liquid before drinking it.

Food businesses should maintain effective waste management, protect exposed food, and implement appropriate pest-control measures.

Keep pests out. Keep food safe.
