Prioritizing Mental Health in the Workplace | World Mental Health Day 2026 💚

Tomorrow, October 10, marks World Mental Health Day, and in recognition of this important occasion, the Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Department of the BVI Health Services Authority hosted a special Mental Health and Wellness Bazaar, centred on the importance of prioritizing mental health in the workplace.

Our healthcare professionals dedicate so much of themselves to caring for others, often placing their own physical, mental, and emotional well-being on the back burner. Today, we wanted to turn that care inward and remind our staff that those who spend their lives caring for others deserve to be cared for, too.

The bazaar provided a refreshing opportunity for staff to step away from their demanding routines, unwind, reconnect, and enjoy a little well-deserved self-care. From complimentary massages and delicious snacks to a delightful shopping experience featuring local vendors, the event created an atmosphere of relaxation, appreciation, connection, and community.

Beyond the shopping and pampering, the initiative carried a deeper message: mental health in the workplace is not a luxury; it is a necessity. A healthy workforce is not simply one that is productive, but one in which employees feel valued, supported, appreciated, and encouraged to prioritize their well-being.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful vendors, contributors, and everyone who helped make this initiative possible. Most importantly, we thank our hardworking BVI Health Services Authority staff for the compassion, dedication, and resilience they demonstrate every day.

As we commemorate World Mental Health Day, may we remember that creating mentally healthy workplaces requires more than a single day of recognition. It requires a continuous commitment to kindness, understanding, meaningful support, and a culture where employee well-being truly matters.

Because caring for the caregivers is just as important as caring for those they serve. 💚

💛WORLD SU***DE PREVENTION DAY 2026 💛

Changing the Narrative on Su***de — Start the Conversation.

Sometimes the person who is struggling the most is the one still showing up, still smiling, still going to work, still caring for everyone else.

We cannot always see someone’s pain.

Today, on World Su***de Prevention Day, we are reminded of the power of something that seems so simple: "a conversation".

Ask the question.
Listen without judgment.
Sit with someone in their difficult moment.
Remind them that asking for help is not weakness.
And never underestimate the power of saying, “I’m here. You don’t have to carry this alone.”

Across the Caribbean, su***de continues to claim precious lives and deeply affect families and communities. Behind every statistic is a person, someone’s child, parent, sibling, friend, colleague or loved one, whose life mattered and whose absence is deeply felt.

This is why we must change the narrative.

From silence to conversation.
From stigma to compassion.
From judgment to understanding.
From isolation to connection.
From hopelessness to the possibility of another tomorrow.

If you are struggling today, please remember, your life is bigger than this moment. Your story is still being written. There are people who want to listen, people who want to help, and there is no shame in reaching for them.

And to the rest of us: check on the strong friend. Check on the quiet colleague. Check on our young people. Check again, even when someone says, “I’m fine.”

Sometimes one genuine conversation can open the door to hope.

🌟 Community Outreach in Action! 🌟

Community Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services was delighted to participate in the Honourable Vincent Wheatley , Ninth District Back-to-School Event! 🎒📚💚

And yet again, the Outreach Queens did their thing! 👑✨ Ms. Heywood and Ms. Percival were out in full force, engaging with children, parents, and families and making mental health education both fun and meaningful.

Through interactive games, activities, and conversations, the children learned important lessons about mental health, identifying and expressing their emotions, and healthy coping skills. It is always amazing to see how much children can learn when we meet them at their level and make the experience enjoyable.

We also had the opportunity to connect with parents and caregivers, checking in on how they are coping, encouraging open conversations about mental wellness, and reminding them that taking care of their own mental health is just as important as caring for their children and loved ones.

This event is one we genuinely look forward to every year. The warmth of the Ninth District community, the excitement of the children, and the opportunity to promote positive mental health make it such a rewarding experience.

A heartfelt thank you to the Honourable and his team for once again inviting Community Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services to be part of this wonderful initiative.

Taking it back to a truly historic and unforgettable evening, the official launch of Community Mental Health's Anti-Stigma Campaign and the introduction of the Jonathan Matthew Culshaw Scholarship Fund.

Set against the elegance of a Masquerade Gala with a Wakanda inspired theme, the evening was more than a celebration, it was a movement. It brought together community members, advocates, professionals, and supporters united by one mission: to challenge stigma, promote understanding, and create hope for those affected by mental health challenges.

One of the most powerful moments of the night came from our Champions, individuals with lived experience of mental illness, who courageously shared their personal journeys. Their stories of resilience, recovery, strength, and hope reminded us that mental health does not define a person and that recovery is possible. Their voices continue to inspire change and encourage others to seek help without fear or shame.

The event also marked the launch of the Jonathan Matthew Culshaw Scholarship Fund, established in memory of the late Jonathan Matthew Culshaw, a beloved Harney's employee and created to support the development of future professionals in behavioural and mental health fields in the Virgin Islands. The scholarship was made possible through the generosity of Harneys BVI and proceeds from this groundbreaking gala, helping to build the next generation of compassionate mental health leaders.

As we look back on this remarkable evening, we celebrate how far we've come in breaking down barriers, starting important conversations, and building a more understanding and supportive community.

Together, we continue to fight stigma, champion recovery, and invest in the future of mental health in the Virgin Islands. 💚

💙 JUNE IS MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH MONTH 💙

Mental health affects everyone, but too many men continue to suffer in silence due to stigma, fear, or the belief that asking for help is a sign of weakness.

The truth is: seeking help is a sign of strength.

🌍 1 in 8 people worldwide live with a mental health condition.
💙 Men are significantly less likely to seek mental health support.
🗣️ A simple conversation can make a life-changing difference.

This month, let's encourage open conversations, check in on the men in our lives, and remind them that they do not have to carry their burdens alone.

To every man who is struggling: You are not alone. Your feelings are valid. Your life matters.

Week 2 of our Mental Health Awareness Month outreach was another impactful and rewarding one as we continued spreading awareness, education, and support throughout our communities. 💚

Our Mental Health Services team visited more primary schools, creating safe and engaging spaces for students to learn about emotions, self-care, kindness, and the importance of mental wellness from an early age.

We were also happy to once again partner with the Government of the Virgin Islands Department of Human Resources and their Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for outreach activities in Virgin Gorda, continuing important conversations about mental health, wellness, and breaking the stigma within our workplaces and communities.

To wrap up the week, we proudly partnered with Vigilant Stars for a community food drive , a reminder that supporting mental health also means supporting people’s overall well-being with compassion, care, and community connection.

This year’s theme, “More Good Days Together,” continues to remind us that when we work together, support one another, and lead with empathy, we help create healthier communities and brighter days ahead for everyone. 💚

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we started with a bang! 💚🧠

This year’s theme, “More Good Days Together,” reminds us that mental wellness is something we build as a community , through support, education, compassion, and connection. Every conversation, every act of kindness, and every effort to raise awareness helps create more hope, healing, and good days for everyone.

Our dedicated Mental Health Services team proudly visited several schools across the territory, including Little Rainbow, Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Lenora Delville Primary, Elmore Stoutt High School, and Jost Van D**e Primary School. During these visits, students and staff participated in meaningful discussions about mental wellness, coping skills, emotional health and, self-care.

We were also honored to partner with the Government of the Virgin Islands, Department of Human Resources and their Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) Department to bring mental health awareness directly into workplaces and the wider community.

Our week was filled with:
✨ Educational sessions
✨ Interactive games and activities
✨ Mental health information and resources
✨ Community outreach
✨ Positive conversations about wellness and self-care

Breaking the stigma starts with education and understanding. Too often, people suffer in silence because they fear judgment or misunderstanding. Mental health challenges do not define a person, and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Through our outreach efforts, we are helping the public understand that:
💚 It is okay to ask for help
💚 Mental health is just as important as physical health
💚 Healing happens through support and connection
💚 No one should face their struggles alone
💚 Together, we can create more good days for ourselves and each other

Throughout this month, Mental Health Services will continue engaging the public through awareness activities, outreach initiatives, education, and community partnerships aimed at building a healthier and more supportive Virgin Islands.
