The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works (DPW) advises the public that VITRAN fixed-route transit services on St. John are temporarily suspended this morning due to unexpected bus failures.
Services are expected to resume at 11:00 a.m. today.
During this time, bus operators will receive training on the new fixed-route bus that arrived on St. John last evening.
The public is also reminded that VITRAN services on St. Croix for today, Friday, May 29, 2026, are as follows:
• Fixed Route: All services suspended for the entire day.
• ADA Paratransit: Services suspended from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is informing the community of a traffic signal outage at the intersection of Alton Adams Drive and William G. Lewis Lane, adjacent to Charlotte Amalie High School, in St. Thomas.
The Department is aware that the traffic signals are currently offline and is awaiting repairs. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, remain alert, and yield to pedestrians crossing in designated crosswalks within the vicinity.

UPDATE
The Department of Public Works (DPW) advises the public of upcoming road work on Dalmida Road in the vicinity of Hospital Ground on St. Thomas.
DPW contractor – Grace Civil LLC -- has mobilized on site and begun clearing and grubbing activities ahead of paving operations. Paving will commence tomorrow and continue on Monday, June 1, through Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
During this period, the roadway will be closed between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Due to the narrow width of the roadway, oncoming traffic cannot be safely accommodated while construction activities are underway. As a result, motorists will not be permitted within the work zone during work hours (See map for details).

The Department of Public Works (DPW) advises the community that the Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers located in the Fort Christian Parking Lot on St. Thomas are currently being recommissioned following their removal for the 2026 St. Thomas Carnival festivities. The chargers will remain out of service until Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

National Public Works Week concluded last week, after a week of activities and events held across the territory celebrating the Department of Public Works and its employees.
The week highlighted meaningful moments through the community’s support of the new VITRAN fixed route buses added to the fleet, team movie and bowling nights, and community giveback initiatives held across St. Thomas and St. Croix. These activities not only celebrated the hardworking employees of the Department, but also strengthened the bond between DPW and the communities we proudly serve.
The Department of Public Works extends sincere gratitude to all employees, partners, and community members who participated and helped make this year’s celebration a success.
