THRT Shares Territory-Wide Update on Healthcare Facility Redevelopment

ST. CROIX U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS - October 1, 2026 — The Territorial Hospital Redevelopment Team (THRT) continues to move forward with several major health care projects which span across the Virgin Islands. From rebuilding hospitals and community health facilities to developing interim spaces where patients can continue receiving care during construction, each project is part of a broader effort to strengthen health care throughout the Territory.
About THRT
Beginning with the island of St. Croix, the THRT's primary focus has been the completion of three interim projects totaling more than forty-five million dollars.
These projects include Cassava Gardens, 5-Acre Development and the Interim Dialysis site.
Cassava Gardens - St. Croix
Cassava Gardens, located on Hess Road, will serve as the interim site for nonclinical administrative functions, such as the Executive Suite, Financial Services, Business Office, and Medical Records. This location will also house all bulk storage as well as dietary storage in support of JFL North.
Completion of the project, which is 99% complete, is slated by the end of October 2026.
Territorial Hospital Redevelopment Team Executive Director Darryl A. Smalls states that, "Each of these projects are vitally important to the continued provision of healthcare to the residents on the island of St. Croix and supports the transition of services that were once performed within the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital. Once successfully transitioned, this will enable the demolition of the existing JFLH which is anticipated to commence during the first quarter of 2027.
With the support of the funding we have received from FEMA following the hurricanes of 2017, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that while the new hospital is being reconstructed, the patients, staff and residents on the island of St. Croix can rest assured that they will continue to receive quality care and services in these interim facilities."
