A significant moment for falconry, with the passing of a Stage 3 amendment to the Animals and Wildlife (Penalties, Protections and Powers) (Scotland) Act 2020, allowing falconers to once again hunt mountain hares, a low impact sustainable use practice carried out traditionally for hundreds of years as part of Scotland’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
The falconry community owes a debt of thanks for their hard work to Roxane and Barry Blyther, who organised the falconers’ petition and led the efforts to see this amendment successfully passed. Their commitment, persistence, and leadership were key to this outcome.
Their work was supported by many individual falconers, alongside constructive lobbying and political advocacy from the International Association for Falconry and Conservation of Birds of Prey, the Scottish Hawk Board, Hawk Board, and the British Falconers’ Club.
A genuine congratulations to Roxane and Barry, and sincere thanks to everyone involved in supporting this important step for falconry heritage and practice.
This showed clearly the importance of our representative organizations and community engaging in political policy processes to safeguard the art of falconry.
