🌿💧 Communities in Maewo Strengthen Water Resource Management Skills for a More Resilient Future 💧🌿
📣Today was the opening of the Water Resource Management Plan Train the Trainers (TOT) workshop in Lalavaru Community, North Maewo.
🟢The TOT is bringing together participants from Area Councils, community water committees, fishers’ groups and other community members to strengthen their knowledge and skills in managing upland and coastal resources.
🔵Today and throughout the week, participants are exploring practical ways to protect and safeguard water sources, restore degraded watersheds through tree planting, reduce the impacts of erosion and landslides, and strengthen community-based management of coastal resources. The sessions also emphasize the vital leadership role that women and youth play in building resilient and sustainable communities.
Key topics covered include:
💧 Water source protection for springs, rivers, and streams
🌳 Watershed restoration, tree planting, and sustainable land management
🔥 Preventing bush burning and reducing land degradation
🌊 Community-based coastal resource management
👩🌾 Strengthening the role of women, youth and people with disabilities in community leadership and environmental stewardship
✅️One of the highlights of the training is the development of Community-Based Water Resource Management Plans, which will provide a roadmap for communities to take ownership to protect their watersheds, improve water security, and strengthen resilience to climate change and natural disasters.
By working together to care for their land, forests, rivers, and coastal resources, these communities are taking important steps toward securing a healthier and more resilient future for generations to come.
🟢This Train the Trainer is being delivered in partnership by the Department of Water Resources, Save the Children Vanuatu, Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Pacific Resilience Hub through the Vanuatu Community-based Climate Resilience Project (VCCRP).
VCCRP is funded by the Green Climate Fund with the support of the Vanuatu and Australian Governments and Save the Children Vanuatu
