The Vanuatu Oceans and Maritime team held a consultation on 30 January 2024 with the seven Area Councils of Chiefs and community leaders from Tanna Island. The leaders discussed important topics related to the Vanuatu National Oceans Policy.
Here are the highlights:
1. The Area Councils of Chiefs from Tanna Island agreed on the need to resolve maritime boundaries with neighbouring countries, which is a crucial step in safeguarding our marine resources and sovereignty.
2. The chiefs accepted the draft offshore Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) map, which will protect 30% of our national marine waters. This is a significant milestone in our efforts to preserve our marine ecosystem.
3. The chiefs support the government’s plan to return the reef plus an additional 100 meters area to nakamal governance. The Area Councils of Chiefs are highly motivated to revive traditional management practices in this area.
A big thankyou to the chiefs, community leaders, and people of Tanna Island for their active participation and support towards sustainable ocean management and conservation. Let's continue working together to protect our precious marine resources for future generations.

Huge news for climate justice! Thanks to the leadership of Vanuatu, the United Nations just adopted a historic resolution calling for justice for present and future generations impacted by climate change. The International Court of Justice will prepare an Advisory Opinion on countries' legal obligations to take climate action. The is a critical legal tool in the fight for climate justice.
Vanuatu Prime Minister Ishmael Kalsakau calls this decision “a win for climate justice of epic proportions. Vanuatu sees today’s historic Resolution as the beginning of a new era in multilateral climate cooperation, one that is more fully focused on upholding the rule of international law and an era that places human rights and intergenerational equity at the forefront of climate decision-making.”
He continues “To the rest of the world, know that Vanuatu will continue to lead from the front with highest climate ambition. You can count on Vanuatu to be your staunchest ally in the collective fight for saving our Blue Planet.”
This is a historic win for island nations, which have not contributed substantially to climate change, yet bear the brunt of climate impacts. Vanuatu, a small Pacific island nation, led a significant change with support from around the world. We're proud to partner with their government in protecting their ocean and this blue planet.
