Royal Montserrat Road Safety Tip: The 3-Second Rule
Staying safe on the roads in Montserrat means more than just following the speed limit; it’s about giving yourself enough time to react.
A key part of driving defensively, as highlighted in our Traffic Poster, is maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. We recommend the 3-second rule:
Rule 1. Pick a Marker: Choose a fixed object on the side of the road, like a utility pole or a sign.
Rule 2. Start Counting: When the car ahead of you passes that object, count "one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two, one-thousand-three."
Rule 3. Check Your Gap: If you pass the same object before you finish counting, you’re following too closely. Slow down and increase your distance.
Why it matters:
• Anticipate Hazards: It gives you the space needed to spot obstacles early.
• Adjust for Weather: If it’s raining or the roads are slick, double your count to 6 seconds to account for reduced traction.
• Keep Everyone Safe: Proper spacing ensures that if the car in front brakes suddenly, you have the time to stop safely without a collision.
Let's keep our journeys accident-free. Check your tyres and brakes regularly, put the phone away, and always buckle up.

RMPS Marine Unit Rescues Stranded Vessel Following Engine Failure:
LITTLE BAY, Montserrat — The Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS) Marine Unit successfully executed a rescue operation on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, assisting a vessel stranded 16 nautical miles off the coast of Port Little Bay.
The incident began when the vessel issued a distress call after suffering a mechanical failure and exhausting its fuel supply. In a swift response coordinated by Inspector Maxcine Lee, the Marine Unit deployed its newly commissioned vessels to intercept the craft and provide emergency assistance.
The rescue operation was spearheaded by a team of six officers: Sergeant Ryan Darroux, Sergeant Delbert Williams, and Police Constables Sherman Valmond, Dion West, Kevilon St. Louis, and St. Luke Leblanc. Upon reaching the stranded vessel, the team successfully delivered fuel and ensured the craft could return to port safely, avoiding potential maritime hazards.
The RMPS highlighted the critical role of inter-agency cooperation in the mission's success, citing seamless collaboration with:
• The Montserrat Port Authority
• HM Customs
• The Immigration Department
The RMPS also extended formal recognition to Mr. Dennis Silcott, whose diligent monitoring of marine radio channels proved vital. Mr. Silcott relayed the initial distress report to the authorities, allowing for a significantly faster deployment of emergency services. His proactive communication was described by the RMPS as an "invaluable asset" to local maritime safety.
Following the successful resolution of the incident, the RMPS Marine Unit issued a reminder to all mariners regarding the importance of voyage preparation. To ensure safety at sea, vessel operators are urged to:
• Maintain Fuel Reserves by always carrying significantly more fuel than the estimated requirements for the trip.
• Verify Equipment by ensuring engines and safety gear are inspected and fully operational before departure.
• Ensure Communication by carrying reliable, fully charged communication devices and monitor standard marine channels.
The RMPS remains committed to the protection of Montserrat’s territorial waters and the safety of all those operating within them.

Community Engagement | Brades Nursery & Primary School
Some of the most powerful moments in policing don’t happen in emergencies, they happen in classrooms, in conversations and in the smiles of our children.
On 30th April, officers from Shift #1 of the Neighborhood Team visited Brades Primary and Nursery School, where what started as a routine engagement quickly became something much more special.
At the Primary School, officers engaged students in meaningful and educational conversations, reinforcing the importance of attending school, making positive choices and understanding the value of discipline and respect including one day seeing themselves in a Police uniform.
At the Nursery School, the energy shifted beautifully. As the children prepared for devotion, curiosity took over. Questions flowed, laughter filled the room and our officers found themselves learning just as much as they were teaching.
Officers demonstrated elements of their equipment, explained their roles in simple engaging terms and encouraged the children to always feel safe and supported by the Police. The connection was genuine. The morning ended with songs, smiles and a shared sense of community. These are the moments that remind us why we serve.
We extend our sincere thanks to the staff and students of the Brades Nursery and Primary School for their warm welcome. Engagements like these continue to strengthen our commitment to serving, protecting and inspiring the next generation.
