Ambassador Georg Schnetzer met with justice minister Donika Gervalla-Schwarz to discuss about the reform agenda of Kosovo and the cooperation between Austria 🇦🇹 and Kosovo 🇽🇰 in the justice sector.

He expressed optimism regarding the imminent conclusion of the agreement on judicial cooperation ⚖️ reaffirmed Austria’s partnership and readiness to support Kosovo on its path of EU 🇪🇺 integration.

🇪🇺 EU Enlargement Is More Important Than Ever

Ambassador Georg Schnetzer shared his thoughts from an Austrian perspective about the topic at the Enlargement and Regional Energy Security: European Perspectives on the Western Balkans Conference, in Pristina.

He underlined that Europe’s current strategy does not reflect the geostrategic urgency for enlargement.

,, It is in our strategic interest to have stability, security and prosperity in the Western Balkans. We have to act on it now.“, he emphasized.

This would obviously not mean compromises on the fundamental values enshrined in the Copenhagen Criteria, but rather taking concrete steps to overcome current deadlocks.

The EU 🇪🇺 needs to reach its future citizens much faster and deliver tangible results based on concrete further steps in gradual integration, such as the integration into EU's 'Roam Like at Home' regime 📲 and sectoral integration into the single market during the negotiation process.

In this regard Austria 🇦🇹 launched the Friends of the Western Balkans initiative to keep EU enlargement firmly at the top of the political agenda. Austria has consistently championed the concept of gradual integration, which is now widely recognized as one of the most effective ways to bring the benefits of the EU to citizens in candidate countries even before full accession.

These steps can bring Europe closer to citizens across the Western Balkans.

Ambassador Georg Schnetzer delivered opening remarks at the 4th Kosovo Accreditation Agency’s (KAA) Annual International Conference, held under the theme: “Internal Quality Assurance in Higher Education Institutions: From Evaluation to Quality Culture.”

The progress 📈 achieved by the KAA in recent years is clearly visible. Its return to the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) in 2025 and recognition by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) earlier this year mark important milestones, strengthening Kosovo’s higher education system and its international partnerships.

Austria 🇦🇹 strongly supports these efforts. Through the Austrian Development Agency we have supported Kosovo’s 🇽🇰 higher education sector 🎓 for many years, with a focus on quality assurance, good governance, institutional capacity and internationalization.

As Ambassador Schnetzer highlighted: ,,Strong universities and credible public institutions are essential for economic growth, innovation, social development, and better opportunities for young people.”

We look forward to continuing our partnership and supporting Kosovo’s efforts towards an internationally connected higher education system.

Last week marked the closing event of the project “Empowerment of Kosovo Vulnerable Communities through Better and Equal Access to the Labour Market.”

For the past three years, this project has contributed to improving access to education 📚, vocational education and training and employment opportunities 💼 for children and young people from vulnerable groups across seven municipalities in Kosovo.

Throughout the project, students who had dropped out of school were identified and supported in returning to education 🏫 Vulnerable students received education-related cash assistance, while lower-secondary students benefited from personal development and life-skills programmes. More than 5,000 students also took part in career guidance, vocational orientation and life-skills activities.

These achievements are an important step towards creating more equal opportunities for young people and supporting their successful transition into the labour market.

A sincere thank you to Austrian Development Agency for funding this important project and to our partners Save the Children Kosova/o , Syri i Vizionit and Nevo Koncepti for their commitment and efforts in implementing it.

Together, we are helping build pathways towards greater opportunity, inclusion and a more equitable future for young people in Kosovo.
