Being prepared for an emergency doesn't have to be complicated. It starts with three simple steps: Chat. Plan. Act. 🌦️🔥

💬 Chat
Talk with your household, family, friends and neighbours about emergencies that could affect you. Having these conversations early can help everyone understand their options before an emergency occurs.

📝 Plan

Work together to decide what you'll do during different emergencies. Having a plan in place means important decisions have already been made before the pressure is on.

✅ Act
Take practical steps now to put your preparations into action. Build an Emergency Kit, prepare your home, understand warnings and alerts, and know where to find emergency information.

Whether it's bushfires, storms, floods or extreme heat, a little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow.

----------------

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Canberra and its surrounding regions - this storm is already impacting parts of the nation's capital.

This storm is likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.

The thunderstorm is moving towards the east. It is forecast to affect Belconnen, Hall and Gungahlin by 6:40 pm, but may already be affecting these areas.

The ACT State Emergency Service advises the community to:

A huge thank you to our volunteers who have been working hard to help the Canberra community in difficult, wet conditions since yesterday afternoon.

So far more than 50 requests for assistance have been received by the ACT State Emergency Service as a result of the recent heavy rainfall. These requests have all now been completed by our volunteer units.

The requests for assistance have come from every corner of the capital, and incidents have included:
🪾 Trees and tree branches down across driveways, roads and on houses;
🏡 Garages, gardens and underground car parks being flooded;
💧 Water coming through light fittings in ceilings due to blocked gutters outside.

The wet weather has eased for now, but storms remain active in the region and still pose a potential risk this evening and across the weekend. Please remember to:
⚠️ Take it easy on the roads and drive to the conditions;
⛈️ Keep away from stormwater drains and catchments;
🚗 Move your car under cover and away from trees;
🔒 Secure or put away loose items;
🚧 Never drive, walk or ride through floodwater.

If you need support during a storm or flood, call the ACT State Emergency Service on 132 500.

For weather updates, follow the Bureau of Meteorology.
