Gambling is illegal in Utah. The Utah Constitution has banned it since statehood.

Kalshi calls its platform a “prediction market.” The lawsuit alleges it let Utahns bet money on sporting events, elections and other outcomes.

The company sued Utah in February. It argued federal law stops the state from enforcing its own gambling laws. U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby rejected that argument. The federal appeals court hearing Kalshi’s challenge also refused to block Utah’s laws while the case continues.

Utah will enforce its laws.

Unused prescription drugs don’t stay harmless forever.

Leftover opioids in a medicine cabinet can end up in the wrong hands. A curious teenager. A houseguest. Someone already fighting addiction.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, October 24. The DEA and more than 4,300 law enforcement partners will collect unused and expired medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Drop-off is free and anonymous.

Find a collection site at DEATakeBack.com. Many pharmacies and police departments also keep drop boxes open year-round.

The Office holds opioid companies accountable in court. Families can fight the same crisis at home, one medicine cabinet at a time.

1,512,000 eggs.

That is what Utah secured through its price-fixing case, and the first shipment arrived at the Utah Food Bank this week.

The Office sued three major producers: Cal-Maine Foods, Versova Holdings, and Hickman's Family Farms. According to the complaint, they coordinated to inflate the daily price quotes that set what shoppers pay for eggs, trading pricing plans and bidding strategies instead of competing. That conduct violated the Sherman Act's ban on price fixing.

Utah Food Bank is distributing the eggs through its statewide network of partner pantries, prioritizing families who count on food assistance to get through the month. For many households, eggs are one of the most requested and most expensive staples.

The settlement also bars all three companies for five years from coordinating on bids, prices, or supply, with annual compliance certifications signed under penalty of perjury.

Utah families paid too much. This is the money coming back.

Financial exploitation can take a lifetime of savings in a matter of moments.

At the NAAG Eastern Region Meeting in Philadelphia, Attorney General Derek Brown joined colleagues from across the country to discuss how we can better protect older Americans from abuse and financial exploitation.

The conversation focused on recognizing the tactics scammers use, strengthening partnerships, and finding new ways to protect older adults from those who seek to exploit them.

Protecting Utah’s older adults takes vigilance, collaboration, and accountability.

California pays for homeschool materials, science kits, math workbooks, art supplies, all of it. Add religious materials and the money disappears.

The Office of the Utah Attorney General led a coalition of states asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear Woolard v. Thurmond and shut this discrimination down. The Ninth Circuit let California get away with it by calling a program run out of family kitchens "public schooling." Then it said that California was free to treat religious homeschooling families as second-class citizens. But the Supreme Court has already rejected that trick three times: Trinity Lutheran, Espinoza, Carson.

Today is National Public Lands Day. In Utah, that means more than a day on the trail.

The federal government controls about two-thirds of the land in this state. Thousands of miles of roads and trails cross that land, and Utahns have driven and hiked them for generations to reach campsites, grazing allotments, hunting grounds, and the towns on the other side.

Those routes are not guaranteed. A single closure can cut a family off from a favorite canyon, a rancher off from the range, and a county off from a road it has kept up for decades.

The Office of the Utah Attorney General goes to court to keep these roads open. Many were in use before 1976, and under federal law that keeps the right to travel them with Utah.

Public lands are not run best from across the country. They belong closest to the people who live on them.

We opened the new home of the Juab/Millard County Children's Justice Center this week.

When a child discloses abuse, they shouldn't have to tell their story again and again to police, caseworkers, doctors, and prosecutors in unfamiliar offices. A CJC brings that whole team under one roof, in a space built to help kids feel safe and provide support to caregivers. Forensic interviews, medical exams, mental health support, and victim advocacy all happen in one place.

This new facility gives children and families in Juab and Millard counties more room and better care, close to home. Thank you to our county partners who put in the hard work to make this possible.

95 high school juniors and seniors are taking a seat at the table this year with the Attorney General's Student Advisory Council.

These students will spend the year with AG Derek Brown, lawmakers, prosecutors, and policy experts, meeting for seminars and roundtables at the Utah State Capitol. They will weigh in on the issues the Office is working on right now, from online safety and substance abuse to youth crime. They will sit in on committee hearings and follow legislation as it moves, a firsthand look at how a bill becomes law.

The students come from communities across Utah. Past councils have shaped work the Office cares about, offering input on L.E.T.S. Stay Safe Utah, the SafeUT App, and proposed legislation.

Utah's young leaders deserve a real seat in the conversations that affect them. This year, 95 of them have one.
