⁉️ When do you think this lifejacket was last serviced?

Part of staying safe out on the water includes servicing your inflatable lifejackets annually, or in accordance with the manufacturers instructions 🔧

🐟 Are you fishing for trouble?

👀 Navigating enclosed waters can be tricky with hidden hazards. Waters can be murky; hiding trees, rocks and other snags.

If you're unsure about an area, reduce your speed, use your depth finder if you have one, and slow down to keep a proper lookout

"I’ve fished for snapper at Fingal Island a thousand times, only difference about this day was the sea was a bit bigger. Looking back, I shouldn’t have gone out 🌊

I'd already got two big snapper in the esky, but things started getting a bit hairy and I'd decided to go home. As I was lifting the anchor a wave came over the top of The Stinkpot, filled it with water and I knew immediately I was in strife...

My boat rolled to the side and then completely capsized and began drifting towards the rocks. I let go and drifted out into deeper water.

The sun had set and I was floating in the water. I didn’t panic and was conserving my energy.

Suddenly, I was bumped by something on my shoulder in the darkness. It was one of my oars. I put it under my arms for buoyancy. Not long after, another bump on the other shoulder - it was the second oar. I put that under my other arm. Then a plastic bucket floated by, I turned it upside down for extra buoyancy. Together with my life jacket, these items became my lifeline and helped keep me afloat for the next 4 hours 🛟

As it got colder in the darkness, hypothermia and hypoglycaemia set in. ❄️ At this stage it was the cold that was of greatest concern to me.

My wife is aware of the time I usually arrive home and when I hadn't returned at the normal time, she sounded the alarm. A series of calls to the police by her and my friends informed them of my location.

After spending five hours in the water, I finally saw the light I had been hoping for—the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. That light guided NSW Water Police directly to me, allowing them to pull me from the water 🔦

Ultimately, the life jacket saved my life, without it I wouldn’t have lasted 5 mins 🦺"

Thankfully John Stinker Clarke (Stinker Fishing) 'Lived to Tell the Tale' and has his Stinkpot back. He'll be out on the water again wearing his trusty lifejacket and logging on and off with Marine Rescue.

As the skipper, you're responsible for the safety of everyone on board

That includes making sure children under the age of 12 have their lifejackets on 🦺

Last Friday, we spotted a broken down vessel displaying its V sheet within Port Kembla Harbour 🏳️

Boating Safety Officer Emma was nearby and gave a tow to the grateful skipper and his grandson back to the boat ramp 🛥️

The skipper had all the right safety equipment which meant he could display his V sheet and make a call on his marine radio which resulted in Marine Area Command and Marine Rescue also attending soon after BSO Emma 🤙
