Senator Cristina Castro State Senator for the 22nd District, representing parts of the NW Suburbs. Majority Caucus Whip.

State Senator Cristina Castro represents the 22nd District, which includes all or part of 10 different communities located within Cook and Kane County. She is a second-generation Mexican-American and lifelong district resident who is committed to her community and to public service. Castro’s involvement in the community started during high school when she participated in student groups, volunteered at school functions and helped coordinate and plan activities at school and in the Elgin community. Through these volunteer efforts she discovered her deep passion for helping others and working with the community. After high school, Castro received an associate degree from Elgin Community College, then became the first person in her family to earn a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from Northern Illinois University. While active in her community throughout her life, Castro’s public service career began in 2008 when she was elected to the Kane County Board where she served until 2016. In addition to the Kane County Board, she served on the board of directors for the Illinois Housing Development Authority, Black History Family Festival and Centro de Información. Castro has a marketing and communications management background and has held positions in both the public and private sector. In 2015, she decided to run for the Illinois State Senate with the intention of using her professional background, life experiences and compassion to represent the interests and concerns of the people of the 22nd District. She has stood up for working families and isn’t afraid to ask the tough questions. She has reached across the aisle on the issues that matter most to the people in her district and works in a bipartisan fashion to help solve problems and to move Illinois in the right direction. She is a member of the Latino Caucus and serves on multiple committees: Appropriations I; Commerce and Economic Development; Committee of the Whole; Energy and Public Utilities; Government Accountability/Pensions (Chairperson); Labor; Opioid Crisis Abatement Spec. Com.; Revenue (Chairperson); Transportation; Veterans Affairs (Vice-Chairperson). Castro and her husband, Joe McKeown, reside on the east side of Elgin with their three dogs.

My staff and I had a scary fun time at the Elgin Police Department's Halloween Extravaganza yesterday! As state senator, I always look forward to connecting with residents in the 22nd District and events such as this one give me the opportunity to do just that. Thank you EPD for hosting such a fun night!

State Senator Cristina Castro (D-Elgin) released the following statement Wednesday after the passing of civil rights activist and labor leader, Dolores Huerta:

“My heart is heavy after learning of Dolores Huerta’s passing. Huerta was a pillar in the civil rights and labor movements, dedicating her life to being a voice for the voiceless and a force for positive change.

“She was a central figure in the farmworker and labor movements of the 1960s, helping establish the National Farm Workers Association, now known as the United Farm Workers, in 1962 and playing an indispensable role in the 1965 Delano grape strike, leading nationwide boycotts in protest of hazardous pesticides and unfair pay.

“Through her perseverance, Huerta inspired thousands to take to the streets and make their voices heard. Her activism led to securing the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975, the first law in the nation to grant farmworkers the right to collectively bargain.

“I want to extend my deepest condolences to her family and give thanks to an incredible woman who opened doors, strengthened communities and taught us all the simple but powerful truth, ‘Sí, se puede.’ I am mourning her passing and will honor the legacy she has left behind.”

I was honored to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Illinois Park Elementary school. Until recently, Illinois Park was an early childhood center, and this year it transitioned back to an elementary school.

In effort to help that transition, renovations reconfigured classrooms for the students, updated building systems and refreshed common areas and support spaces. The project created a redesigned parent drop-off and pick-up circulation pattern to better accommodate students and their families. Additionally, the renovations included a new multi-purpose room on the east side of the building.

The facility is beautiful, thank you for having me!
