Have we been telling this York ghost story wrong? 👻

The Golden Fleece on Pavement is famous for its ghostly airman, usually described as a Canadian called Geoff Monroe.

But two York researchers found a different story in the archives: a British airman had died after falling from a window here in 1944.

And the name ‘Geoff Monroe’? According to their research, it came from a former guest’s dream.

Have you ever experienced anything at the Fleece that you couldn’t explain? 👀

Not a shop entrance… a Shambles shortcut. 👀

This narrow passage at 37 Shambles leads straight to Shambles Market. The building dates to the late 1400s, and that unusually shaped opening has a name: an ogee arch.

A shortcut you use, or one you’ve always walked past?

Why does this York pub keep its b**r upstairs? 🍺🌊

Because the River Ouse doesn’t always stay outside.

The King’s Arms on King’s Staith is run by Tadcaster’s Samuel Smith’s Brewery. Its building dates from the early 1600s, and it was once known as the Ousebridge Inn.

Flooding has shaped how it works: the b**r and main electrics are upstairs, and as the water rises, the pub closes and removable fittings are taken to safety. Once the water retreats, everything is scrubbed, hosed down and disinfected before reopening.

The flood chart inside records just how high the Ouse has reached. In 2000, the water came close to the bar ceiling. A former manager also recalled a couple canoeing through one door and out of the other!

Then there are the house rules: no phone use inside, no TVs or background music, and no swearing. Conversation is the point.

Would the no-phone rule make you more likely to visit, or put you off?

⛪ Have You Ever Found This Church Off Goodramgate?

Just a few steps from one of York’s busiest streets sits Holy Trinity, a medieval church with origins dating back to the 12th century.

Inside, centuries-old box pews, uneven floors and no electric lighting make it feel remarkably untouched by time.

Have you ever ventured through the archway to visit? 👀
