While Pedestrian fatalities are trending down, we know that one pedestrian fatality is already one too many. ⬇️

Our decades-long initiative to redesign the most dangerous streets across the five boroughs has shown that building safer streets works to keep more New Yorkers safe while traveling.

Swipe to see how we are redesigning the streets you know and love, as Vision Zero Reimagined expands what’s possible.

Meet NYC DOT’s newest truck… The Stripe Hog

The Hog is a specialized truck that can remove a wide variety of markings on the street as well as clean and prepare surfaces for new markings. It’s a beast in action. It uses a high-pressure water system to take markings off the road and a built-in vacuum that collects any wastewater and removed material as it operates.

Along with its expert crew, The Stripe Hog gives NYC DOT greater in-house capabilities for markings removal which is generally a key step in any major roadway improvement project.

Here we’re seeing the Stripe Hog at work removing “Bus Only” markings on Lexington Avenue where a new offset bus lane was installed to replace a curbside bus lane. As you can see, with one pass the Hog makes markings disappear with ease.

The Stripe Hog was first deployed in early August and has been in used in all five boroughs since then.

Make sure you keep an eye out for the Hog on your street.

What does Vision Zero look like in action? Just look at Queens Boulevard.

Queens Boulevard was one of the most dangerous streets in our city. Many called it the Boulevard of Death. When Vision Zero was launched it was named as a priority corridor and over the next decade received many street improvements to make it safer.

Those improvements worked.

Traffic related fatalities on Queens Boulevard are down 70% since its redesign. .

Last week we released our new action plan, Vision Zero Reimagined, which is a 10-year blueprint for the future of Vision Zero. A big part of our commitment to safe streets are improvements like the ones on Queens Boulevard. We’re going to advance bold projects to keep New Yorkers safe on our roads.
