From tracking infectious diseases to improving our understanding of human biology, data plays an important role in advancing healthcare.

For 25 years, A*STAR Bioinformatics Institute (A*STAR BII) has been using data, AI and computational tools to turn complex biological information into insights that benefit research, healthcare and industry.

🎉 Last week, A*STAR BII celebrated its 25th anniversary with researchers, healthcare professionals and industry partners.

At its Scientific Symposium, participants explored how data and AI can help scientists better understand diseases, develop new healthcare solutions and improve patient care.

As we celebrate this milestone, we look forward to sharing stories from A*STAR BII's partners and collaborators in the coming weeks, highlighting the institute's contributions and what's next for biomedical research.

Singapore biotech firm AMILI wanted to change that.

Through A*STAR's T-Up programme, scientist Dr Germaine Yong joined forces with AMILI to develop a faster, more affordable way to study how food ingredients affect gut microbes.

The result? What previously took 12–18 months can now be done in just three months!
The innovation has also helped AMILI scale its testing capabilities sixfold.

That's the power of bringing research expertise and business needs together — turning scientific innovation into real-world impact.

During surgery, every decision counts. Yet traditional tissue assessment relies on pathology tests after tissue is removed and processed, meaning crucial insights often aren't available at the exact moment they're needed most.

Occellvision, an A*STAR IMCB spin-off founded by scientist Dr Rachel Sim, is set to change that!

By leveraging AI-assisted imaging, Occellvision’s advanced optical imaging platform delivers histology-like images right at the point of care. This real-time visibility supports better surgical decision-making, helps reduce the need for repeat surgery, and improves patient outcomes.

Occellvision’s progress also showcases the power of venture-building support. Through A*StartCentral's venture programmes, Dr Sim participated in Open Mike and the Essentials Bootcamp — building key entrepreneurial skills and engaging early with potential clinical partners to ensure the tech solves real-world medical needs from day one.

From scientific research to clinical impact, Occellvision is a true testament to what happens when science meets entrepreneurship.

AI, robotics and advanced manufacturing technologies are opening up new possibilities for factory floors. But the real challenge lies in moving beyond promising ideas and pilots to solutions that companies can adopt, scale and benefit from.

At Industrial Transformation ASIA-PACIFIC (ITAP) 2026, A*STAR announced new initiatives and partnerships to help bridge this gap.
The Sectoral AI Centre of Excellence for Manufacturing (AIMfg) is entering its next phase. Building on collaborations with 30 manufacturers and 23 completed AI projects, AIMfg will tackle more complex industrial challenges and bring AI capabilities to more manufacturers across Singapore.

We are also pushing emerging technologies closer to real-world deployment. The newly launched Singapore Embodied AI Challenge for Manufacturing, led by the National Robotics Programme (NRP), challenges innovators to develop robotics solutions around actual industry needs, creating a clearer pathway from research to application.
Innovation also thrives beyond borders. Through a new partnership with Bavaria Makes, NAMIC Singapore will connect Singapore's additive manufacturing ecosystem with Bavaria's industry and research networks, opening up opportunities for knowledge exchange and joint development.

The ambition is clear: to move promising technologies beyond the lab and into the heart of industry. By bringing research, industry and partners together, A*STAR is accelerating the adoption of emerging technologies to transform how manufacturers operate, compete and grow.
