German Unity Day brought a special occasion to St. Louis this year: the opening of the new Goethe-Institut on October 3, welcoming the institute back to the city after nearly three decades. Consul General Michael Ahrens joined the celebrations to mark this important milestone.

Among those in attendance were Serap Güler, Minister of State at the German Federal Foreign Office ( Serap Güler ); Gitte Zschoch, Secretary General of the Goethe-Institut ( ); and St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer ( Mayor Cara Spencer ), as well as members of the region’s cultural, educational, political, and business communities.

The new institute will create further opportunities to learn German, engage in cultural exchange, and strengthen ties between Germany and the United States across Missouri and the wider Midwest.

Congratulations to the Goethe-Institut on its return to St. Louis! We look forward to the new possibilities this chapter will bring for German-American relations in our region.

🇩🇪 Last week, we held our yearly Day of German Unity celebration at the beautiful Chicago Cultural Center, bringing together friends, partners, and members of the German-American community from across the Midwest.

Today, on German-American Day, we’re especially grateful for the incredible community that brings together German heritage, American life, and a shared passion for keeping these connections strong.

A huge thank you to our sponsors and to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so special. We’re grateful for your continued support and for the many ways the German-American community enriches the Midwest.

Here’s to community, connection, and the enduring ties between Germany and the United States! 🇩🇪🇺🇸

Getting invited on this trip to Germany was an absolute dream. 🇩🇪 When I first started creating content, I wanted to be a mini female Anthony Bourdain, but realistically, I didn’t have the money to keep traveling. So I focused on Chicago. I love our city so much, but my dream is to travel the world. Needless to say, teared up a bit when I got my acceptance email back from German Consulate General in the Midwest on this trip. 🥹

Germany completely blew me away, but Freiburg was easily my favorite stop. It’s basically the quintessential German fairytale town, without feeling packed with tourists. I’m just so grateful I got to experience it.

Chicago will always have my heart when it comes to food, but there are definitely a few things we can take notes from on Berlin 🇩🇪🍴 They have some of the most incredible food halls, secret no-filming restaurants, and some seriously unique dining experiences you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

25 years on, we remember those who lost their lives on 9/11. One of them is Sebastian Gorki, a German living and working in New York in 2001.

In this video, Sebastian’s son, Nicholas Gorki, speaks about his father, his family, and how he remembers and carries his father’s memory with him, despite never having had the chance to meet him.

Thank you, Nicholas, and the Gorki family, for sharing your story. We will never forget.

On September 11, 2001, German President Johannes Rau was in Helsinki for a planned concert when news of the terrorist attacks in the United States reached him. The concert was not canceled but Rau asked that the program be changed. Instead of the evening’s planned music, the audience heard music of mourning.

He said in a speech before the concert:

„Wir denken an Mütter, die ihre Kinder verloren haben, wir denken an Kinder, die ihre Eltern nie wiedersehen und wir wissen, in den nächsten Wochen werden die Bilder und die Nachrichten darüber rund um die Welt gehen. Und irgendwann wird der Alltag uns dann wieder einholen."

“We think of mothers who have lost their children; we think of children who will never see their parents again. And we know that in the coming weeks, the images and the news of this tragedy will travel around the world. And at some point, everyday life will catch up with us again.”

Twenty-five years later, everyday life has returned. But we will always remember.

Ferdinand Lassalle was one of the founders of the German labor movement. In „Das Arbeiter-Programm“ (The Workers’ Programme) (1862), considered one of the first major documents of Germany’s organized working class, he articulated a central idea of the 19th-century workers’ movement:

„Seine (des Arbeiters) Sache ist daher in Wahrheit die Sache der gesamten Menschheit, seine Freiheit ist die Freiheit der Menschheit selbst, seine Herrschaft ist die Herrschaft aller.“

“[His] (the worker’s) interest is in truth the interest of the whole of humanity, [his] freedom is the freedom of humanity itself, and [his] domination is the domination of all.”

Written during the formative years of the German labor movement, Lassalle’s words reflect the ideas that helped shape the fight for worker’s rights. These early movements laid the groundwork for many of the workplace rights, protections, and collective bargaining standard workers rely on today.

35 years ago, on August 28, 1991, the Foreign Ministers of Poland, Germany, and France met in Weimar to launch what would become the Weimar Triangle. Meeting in the aftermath of the Cold War, they sought to identify shared interests for Europe's future, strengthen cross-border cooperation, and help build a more united Europe.

Today, that spirit of partnership continues at the consular level, where our Consulates are always looking for ways to support one another, strengthen our communities, and advance shared priorities.

After 35 years, the message remains as important as ever: partnership makes us stronger
