BASILAN — Authorities seized an estimated PhP 573,000 worth of suspected smuggled ci******es during a joint seaborne patrol operation along the coastal area of Sitio Tehem, Barangay Townsite, Maluso, Basilan, on September 29, 2026.

The operation was launched following a report from a concerned citizen regarding several unidentified individuals allegedly unloading suspected smuggled ci******es along the coastal area.

Personnel of the Maluso Municipal Police Station (MPS), Basilan MARPSTA, 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (2nd PMFC), Basilan, and the Bureau of Customs (BOC), Isabela, Basilan, joined forces in the operation.

While traversing the waters off Sitio Tehem, the operating team spotted a motorized banca carrying several individuals who appeared to be unloading unidentified cargo along the shoreline.

Upon noticing the approaching authorities, the occupants of the banca reportedly fled toward the shallow portion of the mangrove area, while individuals on the shoreline ran toward mainland Maluso. Both groups managed to evade arrest.

A subsequent inspection of the coastal area led to the discovery of several abandoned boxes of ci******es believed to have been smuggled into the country. No individual claimed ownership of the items, and no legal documents, permits, or proof of lawful importation were presented.

The authorities seized the items for an alleged violation of Republic Act No. 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).
The confiscated items consisted of 10 master cases, equivalent to 500 reams, of Astro Red ci******es, with an estimated total value of PhP 573,000.

The seized ci******es are currently under the custody of Basilan MARPSTA for proper documentation and disposition in coordination with the appropriate government agencies.

Authorities continue to strengthen maritime patrol and law-enforcement operations to curb the entry and distribution of illicit goods within the province.

PBGen Christopher Abecia commended the operating personnel for their coordinated efforts and commitment to strengthening maritime law enforcement and preventing the entry of illicit goods into the province.
