ICE detains Chicago Public Schools senior and his mother: ‘We had done everything by the rules’ 05/20/2026

A CPS senior in a neighboring district has been detained by ICE and taken out of state after attending a routine immigration check-in. Ricardo Hernandez-Navarrete and his mother Liliana, who was also detained and then separated from her son, were following proper protocols and have no criminal records.

Ricardo should be celebrating his upcoming plans to graduate and pursue his dream of playing soccer in the fall for Truman College. Instead, he is alone in an ICE detention center in Kentucky after being shuffled between different facilities, including having been put into solitary confinement. ICE's continued targeting of our neighbors and community members is unacceptable and Ricardo should be released immediately.

ICE detains Chicago Public Schools senior and his mother: ‘We had done everything by the rules’ In March, ICE detained Ricardo Hernandez-Navarrete, 18, a Mather High School senior, and his mother at a routine check in.
