We cover some of the MFI history, trivia, local goings-on, trail systems, and more. Mount Forest Island is a geologic name for the land between the Des Plaines River Valley and the Sag Valley. Periods of glacial retreat subsequently filled "Glacial Lake Chicago". Two moraines ("mounds of earth debris", we'll say) retained the lake waters until, over time, the waters broke through the moraines, resulting in a vast flood. The waters flowed through, carving the Des Plaines River valley and the Sag Valley. The Mount Forest Island, remnants of moraine and glacial deposit, remained in place, surrounded by lake waters. The "MFI" area generally spans from the town of Hickory Hills on the east, heading westward through Willow Springs, and to the eastern edges of Lemont. This landform closely resembles a flat-iron, triangular shape. Rich in geologic and human history, we'll explore its geologic features, tidbits of trivia, recreational opportunities, and much more. Occasionally we'll expand that exploration to nearby areas beyond these boundaries. So be ready to see trails & trains, forests & floodplains, homes & history, ravines & rivers, canals & communities, and who knows what else.

Our Story

Mount Forest Island is a geologic name for the land between the Des Plaines River Valley and the Sag Valley. Periods of glacial retreat subsequently filled the prehistoric Glacial Lake Chicago. Two moraines ("mounds of earth debris", we'll say) retained the lake waters thus creating a shoreline of that prehistoric lake right here in the areas of Willow Springs, Hickory Hills, Palos Hills, Justice, and Lemont. Over time, the waters broke through the moraines, resulting in a vast flood: those waters flowed through, carving the Des Plaines River valley and the Sag Valley. The Mount Forest Island (MFI), remnants of moraine and glacial deposit, remained in place, surrounded by lake waters. It was a prehistoric island amid this vast flood. The MFI area generally spans from the town of Hickory Hills and Palos Hills on the east and south, Willow Springs and Justice to the north, and the eastern fringes of Lemont on the west. This land form closely resembles a triangular, flat-iron shape. Rich in geologic and human history, we explore its geologic features, tidbits of trivia, recreational opportunities, and much more. Occasionally we'll expand that exploration to nearby areas beyond these boundaries. So be ready to see trails & trains, forests & floodplains, homes & history, ravines & rivers, canals & communities, and who knows what else. Please enjoy.
