In December we celebrated over 10 years of work at Mar Vista Gardens AND a transition from providing org support for the Community garden.
The members of the collective are AMAZING and it has been an honor to accompany them as they grew their urban farming skills, their power around the right to grow food in public housing, and their consensus decision making processes. We have no doubt that the collective and the garden will continue to thrive!
A special shout out to the talented members: Maria del Carmen Sanchez who has been the lead anchor and facilitator of the garden since the day it was built and Juan José García who is a phenomenal and relentless food grower. Also a special mention for the transformational leadership of eli tizcareño who worked directly with the members as an AFSC staff and mentor for over six years.
We are thrilled that the local Boys and Girls Club, who are on site and have deep relationships with the community, will be the fiscal sponsor and partner for the Community Garden and is committed to supporting the ongoing leadership of members. We are also excited that LA Compost will continue to partner with the garden.
Thank you MVG Community Garden and everyone who joined us at varying points of this 10 year path. It has been a beautiful journey!
This is not a farewell, but we’ll see you around MVG! Nos estamos viendo!

AFSC Roots for Peace condemns the killing of George Floyd and police violence against activists.
We stand with our AFSC comrades in Minneapolis who are holding space for young people and are calling for defunding the police and investing in community needs. We need this in every city including Los Angeles.
Shanene Herbert, director of AFSC’s Healing Justice program in Saint Paul says “Firing these police officers is not enough. We need resources directed away from the police forces that occupy our communities. We need investment in our young people, in our schools, in our health care, and in transformative forms of justice that address the root causes of harm.”
We urge you to:
1) SIGN PETITION to support our Minneapolis siblings —> http://bit.ly/DefundMPD
2) TAKE Peoples Budget SURVEY and get involved in LA campaign!

3) EDUCATE & CARE for your self and community in whatever way makes sense for you.
