Australian Renewable Energy Agency Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)
Supporting the global transition to net zero emissions. ARENA is the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

We were established by the Australian Government on 1 July 2012. Our purpose is to support the global transition to net zero emissions by accelerating the pace of pre-commercial innovation, to the benefit of Australian consumers, businesses and workers. Terms: bit.ly/ARENACommunityGuidelines

'The energy transition doesn't exist without critical minerals.'

On our podcast, Anish Muchhala speaks about the importance of critical energy minerals like copper and lithium for the transition to renewable energy.

He explains why building renewables can take more metals and minerals than fossil fuel technologies, and why playing a role in cleaner supply chains is a big opportunity for Australia.

You can hear more on the newest episode of ReWired, the podcast spotlighting the Australians turning big clean energy ideas into real-world impact.

Expressions of interest are now open for Solar Sunshot Round 3.

Solar Sunshot Round 3 aims to support the manufacture, development and scale-up of advanced technologies that can help make large-scale solar PV cheaper and faster to build.

We want to hear from companies making and scaling technologies used to construct and operate large-scale solar farms. This includes Australian companies, and international companies willing to establish an Australian presence, with relevant capabilities in:
- racking and tracking technologies
- robotics and advanced automation
- prefabricated solar solutions
- other technologies that can reduce the cost of constructing and operating large-scale solar farms.

Giving more apartment residents access electric vehicle charging at home.

Today we were in Canberra to mark the installation of more than 80 smart charging sockets in an apartment complex as part of the latest installation in NOX Energy's national EV charging rollout.

The installation takes this ARENA-supported project, which is rolling out in at least 16 sites across Australia, to more than 750 charging sockets, with a target of around 2,000 nationwide.

NOX's technology uses load management to keep charging demand within the building’s electrical limits. It also records each participant’s electricity use and reimburses the owners corporation, so residents pay for their own electricity, rather than sharing the cost with neighbours who don’t charge an EV.

With 1 in 6 Australians living in strata properties, practical charging options will be important to making the electric vehicle transition accessible across different housing types.

A Melbourne-developed battery designed for use at home, on the road and off-grid is moving towards scalable local manufacturing.

We’re providing $6.77 million to support Clutch Industries to establish and operate a manufacturing line in Coburg North, Victoria for its PowerNet battery.

The portable 4 kilowatt-hour batteries use solid-state cells, allowing more energy to fit within a compact battery pack. Units can be combined to form a household energy storage system or individually used to power caravans, four-wheel drives, boats and other off-grid applications.

Funded through the Battery Breakthrough Initiative, this support will help Clutch Industries move from product development into scalable Australian manufacturing. The project will also build practical knowledge about the performance of this emerging battery technology in different real-world settings.

It's not just about economics; it's about sovereign capacity.

Copper, lithium and other minerals are a huge, often overlooked part of the transition to renewable energy. Without large quantities of critical energy minerals, it won't be possible to manufacture the technology we need for our future.

In our new episode of ReWired, ARENA's Anish Muchhala, Acting General Manager of Heavy Industry, joins host Danny Kennedy to discuss how improving the supply chain of critical energy minerals can lead to reduced emissions, better economics, and greater sovereign capacity for Australia.

Danny also speaks with Charlie McGill, CEO of ElectraLith about how ARENA funding has help them develop technology to efficiently high-quality lithium and share insights from their work.

What if vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology could put entire commercial fleets to work supplying electricity to the grid?

We’re providing $4 million to JET Charge to deliver Australia’s largest commercial deployment of V2G.

The Realising Electric Vehicle-to-Grid Services 2 (REVS2) project will deploy up to 130 electric vehicles and bidirectional chargers across the ACT Government fleet.

REVS2 builds on the first iteration of the project, which ARENA funded in 2020. That trial showed EVs could safely export electricity to the grid. REVS2 takes the next step by testing how V2G can work in the everyday operations of a large commercial fleet.

Working with partners Australian National University and ActewAGL, the project will generate real-world evidence on how fleets can be rewarded for supporting the grid while still meeting their day-to-day transport needs.
