Did you know Montgomery County residents throw away approximately 97,000 tons of food scraps every year?

This weekend I emptied my backyard composter to start a fresh new batch.

There’s a lot of discussion about what to do with the nearly 490,000 tons of trash generated in our county every year.

Any solution needs to start with expanding food composting countywide. We should all be able to agree to that.

More than 604,000 Marylanders voted in person during the eight days of early voting, setting a new record. Another 357,650 mail-in ballots had already been received, with many more on the way.

With early voting and mail-in ballots expected to surpass 1 million before Election Day, Maryland is seeing an impressive level of civic engagement.

Let’s keep that momentum going. Every vote matters!

Thank you to the thoughtful person who sent me Eats, Shoots & Leaves.

I promise to give it a read, even if we may not agree on where a comma belongs.

Gerrymandering and mid-decade redistricting are national problems that demand a national solution.

We need congressional action or a Supreme Court ruling to level the playing field, ensure fair maps, and let voters — not politicians — choose their federal representatives.

And if you missed The New York Times analysis, seven of the 10 most gerrymandered states are Republican-led.

Maryland ranks 16th.

Fair elections start with fair maps.
