UPDATE -- ON THURSDAY, JULY 9, FROM 7 P.M. TO MIDNIGHT (12 A.M.), eastbound traffic will be diverted at Exit 180 (Akron/state Route 8.), and westbound traffic will be diverted at Exit 187 (Streetsboro/I-480/state Route 14) in order for the contractor to move a construction crane at the Tinkers Creek bridge replacement project in Summit/Portage counties.

Motorists are advised to follow the detours posted on Ohio Turnpike message boards:

– EASTBOUND traffic will take Exit 180; then take state Route 8 south; to state Route 303 east; to state Route 14 west; to return to the Ohio Turnpike; and

– WESTBOUND traffic will take Exit 187; then take state Route 14 east; to state Route 303 west; to state Route 8 north; to return to the Ohio Turnpike.

Please note: the suggested detour route has height restrictions. Drivers should plan their route accordingly.

Thank you for your patience during this temporary traffic diversion!

As our nation celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary, this milestone provides an opportunity to reflect again on the Ohio Turnpike’s history.

When the Turnpike opened in 1955, it represented the most ambitious infrastructure project in Ohio’s history. It predated the Interstate Highway System and quickly became a critical east‑west corridor for the nation, linking the Great Lakes region to the rest of the country.

From its earliest days of paper toll tickets and manual operations to today’s modernized, technology‑driven roadway, the Ohio Turnpike has continually evolved to meet the needs of travelers and the demands of a changing transportation landscape.

As America marks 250 years, our 70‑year legacy reminds us that safe, reliable transportation has always been central to the nation’s growth and prosperity.

Every safe journey depends on making smart decisions behind the wheel – wear your seatbelt, drive sober, obey the speed limit, stay focused, put your phone down, maintain a safe following distance especially in work zones, and follow the highway signs.

To accommodate an increase in traffic over the Fourth of July holiday, roadway construction and maintenance work on the Ohio Turnpike will be limited from 12 p.m., on Thursday, July 2, to sunrise on Monday, July 6. Two lanes of traffic in both the eastbound and westbound directions will remain open in the work zones.

For emergency assistance on the Ohio Turnpike and statewide, safety dial #677.

Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend , the Ohio Turnpike is hosting a Customer Appreciation Event on Thursday, July 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Portage Service Plaza—located at milepost 197 westbound in Mantua. Join us for dollar hot dogs, complimentary Kona Ice, prize giveaways, and more.

Keep roadway safety top of mind this holiday weekend. Impaired driving, speeding and aggressive driving, rear-end collisions, and driver fatigue are among the top factors of highway crashes.

We’ve also partnered with the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) to promote its “Be Safe Together” campaign, “Put Your Mind in Drive,” to prevent distracted driving by taking a safety pledge: put your phone down, follow the speed limit, speak up when you see unsafe driving behaviors, and stay alert. Take the pledge at https://www.besafetogether.org/be-safe-together-safety-pledge.

Take the Be Safe Together Pledge to Reduce Distracted Driving and Save Lives

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission is proud to support the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association’s (IBTTA) Global Road Safety Week (June 22-26, 2026) and the BeSafeTogether campaign to raise awareness of staying focused behind the wheel.

Every day, motorists count on the 241-mile Ohio Turnpike and roadways everywhere to get where they need to go safely. But distracted driving continues to put drivers, passengers, roadway workers, and entire communities at risk.

Put Your Mind in Drive. Stay alert. Help protect every journey. Because safer roads start with all of us.

Take the safety pledge and learn more about the campaign at www.BeSafeTogether.org.
