General information

Women rights have been guaranteed by the Indonesian Constitution, through ratification of the international Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women as well as other laws such as the law against domestic violence. Despite this, Indonesia is facing significant challenges from ensuring equal rights for men and women. The diversity of national laws and interpretations of religious principles along with the role of custom and practice make it difficult to enforce women’s rights. Objective National and local policies and programmes as well as capacities of implementing stakeholders increasingly build a foundation for reducing structural discrimination against women. Approach The project works in three complementary areas: • National policies to improve women’s sociocultural status, especially in the preparation of a new marriage legislation • Sub-national sectoral policies and programms on women empowerment • Grand design for comprehensive capacity development of civil servants in the partner institution The following elements are being promoted in the multi-level approach: advice, capacity development measures, drafting of position papers and policy dialogue processes on issues related to marriage law and support for network building.
