Wildfires are among the most economically destructive hazards globally, and the true costs are rising.
A recent Wildfire Today article highlights new findings from the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)showing that wildfires burned 390 million hectares worldwide in 2025, nearly the size of the EU.
The UN warns that wildfire costs are often concentrated where assets are insured, not where impacts are greatest. When uninsured and long-term impacts are included, total wildfire losses in 2025 may exceed USD 250 billion.
As UNDRR head Kamal Kishore notes, disaster data often focuses on direct impacts and misses the full, long-term consequences for communities and ecosystems.
Understanding the full cost of wildfire is critical to building resilience.
