🚨Take Action To End Illinois' Public Defense Crisis🚨
Illinois' chronic underfunding of public defense is a civil rights crisis. Across the state, public defenders are tasked with overwhelming caseloads and are often deprived of the resources required to provide a quality defense. Funding disparities between the prosecutor’s and public defender’s budgets exist in every county. These dynamics disproportionately impact rural, Black, and Latinx clients who are most likely to be represented by public defenders.
The Funded Advocacy & Independent Representation (FAIR) Act will create a statewide public defender office to support county public defenders and ensure that all Illinoisans have access to high-quality representation.
The bill is scheduled to be heard in the legislature on either Tuesday or Thursday, which means legislators need to hear from supporters!

This morning, more than 120 organizations from across Illinois sent an open letter to the Illinois General Assembly calling on them to protect the Pretrial Fairness Act and oppose SB4228, the State’s Attorneys proposal for gutting this historic legislation. The Pretrial Fairness Act was designed to protect an individual’s right to the presumption of innocence and to address racial disparities in our pretrial system. The changes included in SB4228, however, would deny all Illinoisians those fundamental constitutional rights. If passed, the amendments in SB4228 would further fuel mass incarceration, worsen racial disparities, and create a pretrial system that is far worse than the one in place today.
