France has successfully test-fired its upgraded M51.3 submarine-launched ballistic missile for the first time from the nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine *Le Vigilant* off Brittany on October 6, 2026.

The test, conducted without a nuclear warhead, aimed to validate the missile’s performance and confirm the submarine’s readiness to resume strategic patrols following a major overhaul. Developed by ArianeGroup, the M51.3 features improvements in range, accuracy, and its ability to pe*****te advanced missile-defense systems.

French President Emmanuel Macron observed the launch from the FREMM-class frigate *Auvergne*, underscoring the test’s strategic significance as European security concerns continue to grow.

The upgraded missile is expected to enter service progressively across France’s ballistic missile submarine fleet. It will also support the country’s next-generation SNLE 3G submarines, which are planned to begin replacing the current fleet after 2035, reinforcing France’s long-term sea-based nuclear deterrent.

Germany is moving to strengthen the air-defense capabilities of its F125-class frigates by integrating Diehl Defence’s IRIS-T SLM surface-to-air missile system.

Diehl Defence and the German Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) have signed a contract covering prototype development and extensive live-fire testing to adapt the system for naval operations.

The program follows successful trials aboard the frigate Baden-Württemberg in Norway in October 2025, where a navalized IRIS-T SLM demonstrator met its test objectives.

The planned upgrade would give the F125 frigates a medium-range air-defense capability of around 40 km, expanding their ability to counter aircraft, drones, and other aerial threats while operating at sea.

USS Vicksburg, a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser commissioned in 1992, has left the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility in Philadelphia under tow for Brownsville, Texas, where it will be dismantled and scrapped.

The cruiser served the U.S. Navy for more than three decades and was once selected for a multimillion-dollar modernization program intended to extend its service life.

However, structural deterioration, technical delays, shipyard capacity constraints, and rising costs ultimately led the Navy to cancel the refit and decommission Vicksburg in 2024.

Its final voyage highlights the Navy’s ongoing transition away from aging legacy cruisers toward newer surface combatants, including Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

Vicksburg’s departure marks another significant milestone in the gradual retirement of the Ticonderoga-class fleet.
