Speaker of the Free State Legislature, Honourable Mxolisi Dukwana, delivered the keynote address at day 1 of the Free State Youth Legislation Colloquium, a platform aimed at strengthening legislative oversight over government programmes, policies and interventions directed at youth development.

In his address, the Speaker emphasised that youth unemployment, economic exclusion and limited access to opportunities remain among the greatest challenges facing the province, and called for stronger accountability across all spheres of government to ensure that public resources translate into meaningful improvements in the lives of young people.

The Colloquium brings together government institutions, development partners, researchers, civil society organisations and youth formations to assess the effectiveness of youth-focused legislation, policies and programmes, while generating practical recommendations to strengthen implementation, accountability and service delivery.

The Free State Legislature held its Planery Sitting today, where members considered committee reports, statements by members of the Executive Council, questions and matters concerning youth before the house.

As part of the programme, the Legislature also hosted the Speaker's debate in commemoration of Youth Month. During the debate, Members reflected on the significance of Youth Day, remembering the courage of the youth of 1976 while encouraging today's young people to play an active role in building a better South Africa.

The Sitting provided Members with an opportunity to debate key issues, strengthen oversight and continue working towards improving the lives of the people of the Free State.

In closing, Honourable Zama Sigwebela said: "Today, we do not only remember a date on the calendar. We reflect and honour the courage of the young people who stood up against injustices during the 1976 uprising. They marched because they refused to accept injustice. They believed their future mattered, and their bravery continues to inspire us to build a better South Africa."
