𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐮𝐦-𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬?

These images provide a close-up look at what happens when individual cells within a lithium-ion battery pack become involved in fire.

It’s also a risk we’re encountering with increasing frequency.

𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝟏 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝟒 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐬 𝐒𝐀 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐮𝐦-𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫-𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝.

Unlike conventional fires, lithium-ion battery incidents can involve thermal runaway, where heat generated within a failing cell can trigger neighbouring cells and create a chain reaction.

And 'extinguishing' the visible flames doesn't necessarily mean the risk is over. Damaged cells can retain significant heat and potentially re-ignite.

With solar installations and battery storage now commonplace in South African homes and businesses, understanding how these fires behave - and how they need to be approached - is becoming increasingly important.

Fire Ops SA crews are currently on scene at a thatch fire in Glenferness, Midrand.

Thatch fires can spread rapidly due to the highly combustible nature of the roofing material, making swift intervention critical in limiting fire spread and protecting surrounding structures.

Our crews are actively working the incident.

Dry vegetation, strong winds and a single spark can quickly escalate into a fast-moving fire, threatening lives and property, as well as the environment inhabited by many wild animals.

Simple precautions can make a meaningful difference -
• Avoid open flames in high-risk areas.
• Never discard cigarette butts from a vehicle.
• Ensure controlled burns are properly authorized and supervised.
• Report any signs of fire immediately.
