Situated west of Hartbeesport Dam alongside the Elephant sanctuary it provides an environment where monkeys (primates) can be given their freedom in a natural environment. The sanctuary situated in one of the many Kloofs (Gorges) of the Magaliesberg mountain range provides the perfect environment for Monkeys from around the world. The Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary is a privately owned, non-subsidised sanctuary, covering approximately 7 ha, situated alongside the elephant sanctuary in one of the many kloofs of the Magaliesberg mountain range. Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary in Hartbeespoort, North West Province is one of only eight free-release primate sanctuaries globally. Primates, such as our squirrel, spider and capuchin monkeys, are given a new lease on life at Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary. Previously raised as household pets, or bred for the pet trade, our monkeys are introduced to a wild world laden with waterfalls, lush vegetation, natural mountain springs and the chance to reside in as natural and environment as possible. Our goal is to give them the opportunity to live as they would in the wild. Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary recognizes the importance of community education. Not only are our tours highly informative, but we strive to create awareness toward the benefit of releasing primates into sanctuaries such as our own. Guests leave our tours with the understanding that monkeys do not make good pets, and that they are better suited to a natural, free-living environment. We look forward to guiding you through our Sanctuary, and trust that you will enjoy the splendour of our natural environment to the fullest.

And that really sums it up! There’s something unforgettable about walking through the sanctuary and suddenly having a curious monkey decide that YOU are the quickest route to the food. 😂🍌🐒

I would definitely recommend it for a family outing. Better to see animals in a natural environment and not in small cages.

They give you fruit to feed the monkeys, and the monkeys absolutely love it!”

What a fantastic and detailed 5-star review! Nicolas shared some brilliant tips after visiting the Monkey Sanctuary:

“A really fun and interactive experience with a great team who are professional, knowledgeable and committed. You can also buy a combined ticket with the Elephant Sanctuary.

You’ll walk along the elevated bridges through the sanctuary and can see Capuchin monkeys, Squirrel monkeys, Ring-Tailed Lemurs, Brown Lemurs and Spider Monkeys, as well as other animals.

You can feed the monkeys and they may even climb onto you!

IMPORTANT: Don’t touch the monkeys, shout at them or show your teeth/smile directly at them, as they may interpret this as aggressive behaviour.

Don’t carry anything in your pockets — they are experienced little thieves! 😂 Leave backpacks, handbags, waist bags and other belongings in the lockers provided.

Long hair should be tied back, and it’s best to avoid strong perfumes, fruity-smelling shampoos and jewellery made from seeds, as the monkeys may find them a little too interesting!

Most importantly — have an amazing time, learn and enjoy yourself!” 🐒💚
