Fire season is approaching! 🔥 🚁

Every summer, wildfires break out across Cape Town’s mountain slopes, often threatening nearby homes. Much of the damage can be prevented, but preparation needs to happen now, especially with El Niño warnings issued for what will be one of the driest and hottest summers in recent history.

That’s why, as part of our ongoing CSI efforts, we’re launching the Quay 1 Wildfire Awareness Campaign in collaboration with the Cape Peninsula Fire Protection Association (CPFPA) and NCC Environmental Services.

Over the next few months, we’ll share practical guidance to help you prepare your property, expert advice from the CPFPA and NCC, important Cape Town wildfire alerts throughout the season, and meaningful ways to support local fire prevention efforts.

You can start by supporting the CPFPA, through donations that help fund wildfire prevention and preparedness across Cape Town. If your property borders a fire-risk area, it may also be worth considering membership.

LOOKING AHEAD TOGETHER | CPFPA AGM 2026

On 27 August, CPFPA held its Annual General Meeting at Tygerberg Nature Reserve, bringing together important discussions and developments as we look ahead to the season ahead.

The AGM included the discussion and approval of the updated Business Plan and Veldfire Management Strategy as well as the Rules, a guest presentation on veldfire insurance, and the official introduction of Nicholas Herrmann as CPFPA’s West Ward Manager.

We also shared an update on CPFPA’s growing digital presence with METRIC Research, as well as an exciting new collaboration with Quay 1 International Realty Property and NCC Environmental Services, aimed at strengthening community veldfire awareness, education and preparedness across the Cape Metropolitan Area.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to a productive AGM. Strong partnerships, informed communities and shared responsibility remain central to building greater veldfire resilience.

If you see a fire, report it immediately to the City of Cape Town's Public Emergency Centre:

📞 (021) 480-7700
📞 107 from a landline

Be ready to provide clear information, including:
📍 The location of the fire
🔥 What you can see and the approximate size of the fire/area of smoke
💨 Whether it is spreading and in which direction
🏠 Any people, property or infrastructure that may be at risk
🚙 Any other useful information, such as the best access route, whether 4WD vehicles are required, and any immediate threats or risks.

Once the fire has been reported to the City, contact your relevant CPFPA Ward Manager so they are aware of the incident in their area. Keep our Ward Manager contact details handy — you never know when you may need them.

⚠️ Never put yourself at risk to get a closer look at a fire.

FIREBREAK CHECK: IS YOURS READY?

In the Western Cape, fire season generally runs from October to April – which means September is the time to make sure the necessary preparation has already been done.

Firebreaks form an important part of veldfire risk management and are a legal obligation for landowners in terms of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act. They need to be properly prepared and maintained to serve their purpose.

Take the time to check your firebreaks now. Are they clear, continuous and adequately maintained? Are there any areas that need attention before conditions become hotter and drier?

Don’t wait for the first high fire danger day to discover something has been overlooked.

🔥 Become with CPFPA.

ARE YOU FIRE READY?

Over the past few months, we’ve shared practical information to help landowners and communities prepare for the upcoming fire season.

By now, much of that preparation should already be in place.

Take a look back through our recent educational posts from April and use them as a final check: Are you fire ready for summer?

If you’re not yet a member of the CPFPA, now is a good time to find out more about membership and how we support landowners with veldfire prevention and preparedness.👉 Enquire with us: https://cpfpa.org.za/contact/

🔥 Training together. Preparing together. Responding together.

A valuable multi-agency exercise with SANParks - Table Mountain National Park, Volunteer Wildfire Services, NCC Environmental Services, together with City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, and other partners, putting incident command, communication and coordinated response to the test.

Preparedness starts long before an incident occurs.

On 21 July 2026, CPFPA joined Rob Erasmus for another day of practical fire training at Stonehurst Mountain Estate.

Regular training helps strengthen practical skills, reinforce safe operating procedures and build the confidence needed to work effectively when conditions become challenging.

As we move closer to the Western Cape’s upcoming fire season, operational readiness is more important than ever. Provincial Minister Anton Bredell has confirmed that the Western Cape is preparing for an extended high-risk fire period, stretching from October through May, amid warnings of a potentially severe El Niño and the challenging conditions it could bring.

Ongoing training, preparation and collaboration will therefore remain critical to effective veldfire management throughout the season ahead.

A big thank you to Rob and the Enviro Wildfire Consultancy Pty Ltd - Western Cape team for another valuable day in the field.

MULTI-AGENCY RESPONSE | KLOOFNEK FIRE

On 2 August 2026, a fire broke out in the Kloofnek/Table Mountain area, requiring a coordinated multi-agency response.

CPFPA’s West Ward Manager, Nicholas Herrmann, was also on scene, assisting in multiple roles and supporting the broader response effort.

Incidents like these highlight the importance of coordination, communication and having trained teams ready to respond when fires occur across the Cape Peninsula.

A strong reminder that effective veldfire management is a shared effort.
