Happy Valley HOME A South Peninsula based homeless shelter, offering a stepping stone to life back in society.

We are a NPO registered Homeless Shelter, based in Simon's Town, Cape Town and founded in 1996. Happy Valley Home started in 1991 originally as a soup kitchen run from the Simon's Town Catholic Church. In 1996, it became clear that something more was needed to assist Simon's Town's poor, Mr. Duraan, previous Magistrate of Simon's Town , negotiated with the Navy to use the old arsenal buildings and Happy Valley Home was formerly established.]

Happy Valley Home caters for 65 residents on a 6 month basis. With 25 women & 40 men all over the age of 18, who reside in separated dorms. Each Resident is given 3 meals a day & also gets access to the clothing "store" room if they wish to get warmer clothing from donations given. Happy Valley strives to get the homeless off the streets & into a warm, safe environment. We also provide the opportunity for each resident to get their legal documents in order, like ID documents to obtain employment. Our staff also facilitate in connecting the residents with their families and back into society once again. Because Happy Valley is only allowed to house a maximum of 75 residents at one time, the winter Readiness Programme allows for an extra 10 homeless people to stay as non permanent residents from June to the end of August,

Unfortunately We often to refer homeless intakes to other shelters (with transport to said shelter)

For a small fee of R5, any homeless person is able to choose a FULL outfit for themselves from head to toe. We often feed those who are not residents as well, if we get enough food donations for that month. If we recieve any extra donations of food we will share and donate the excess to a variety of organisations locally who also depend of community donations. With increasing homelessness and limited State funds, Happy Valley relies on the generosity of others and fundraising to meet the demands of the ongoing running costs and homelessness issues,

We are always trying to find ways of improving our already good infrastructure, which is a struggle to maintain. Currently Happy Valley is in the process repair and renovations to some of the infrastructure and facilities. This will be done in phases as to not hinder the daily functioning of the shelter, & to pay attention to each phase specifically for its maximum potential & outcome.

World Mental Health Day | 10 October

Mental health challenges can be a significant contributing factor to homelessness. Without access to appropriate treatment, care and support, people experiencing mental health difficulties can find themselves facing multiple barriers to stable housing and independent living.

At Happy Valley Home, we believe that with the right support, people can begin to rebuild their lives, regain confidence and take steps towards greater independence and reintegration into the community.

Homelessness is not the end of someone’s story. With compassion, appropriate treatment and a supportive environment, recovery and a new chapter are possible.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s remember that behind every person experiencing homelessness is an individual deserving of dignity, understanding and the opportunity to move forward.

Because everyone deserves the chance to find their way home.

Happy Valley Home AGM: Reflecting on 30 Years of Service

Yesterday, Happy Valley Home held its Annual General Meeting, chaired by Simon Liell-Cock, bringing together our community to reflect on the past year and celebrate 30 years of service to the community since 1996.

The meeting included a special motivational talk by John-Ray Knighton F**t, CEO of U-turn Homeless Ministries, and a blessing from Frank Koch of the United Evangelical Fellowship .

Among the highlights of the past year were 13 family reunifications, 71,000 meals served and community donations of more than 15,000 meals and 130 bags of clothing to others in need in Red Hill, Ocean View and Masiphumele, overseen by shelter manager Patrick Msakayeya.

As we mark three decades of service, we also took the opportunity to reflect on Happy Valley Home’s journey, acknowledge the work that has brought us this far, and elect new members to our board as we look towards the future.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey over the past 30 years. Your support helps us continue our work with homeless adults in the Southern Peninsula, supporting them on their journey towards greater stability and independent living.

Here’s to continuing this important work together.

“After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”
— Philip Pullman

On 27 August, a group of residents from Happy Valley Home visited Simon's Town Library for a creative writing workshop, creating a space to put memories, experiences and imagination into words.

For people whose lives have often been reduced to circumstances, labels or the fact of being homeless, having the opportunity to tell your own story can be a powerful act of dignity. Writing gives us a way to remember, reflect, make sense of our experiences and, perhaps most importantly, to be heard.

We are grateful to Simon’s Town Library for welcoming the men of Happy Valley Home and creating a space where their stories can be shared.

Happy Valley Home is one of the oldest homeless shelters in the Southern Peninsula, established in 1996.

Happy Valley operates as a small, independent temporary shelter. In alignment with current guidelines and funding structures associated with the Department of Social Development (DSD), and after careful consideration of operational and safety requirements, we have made the difficult decision to transition to accommodating male clients only.

We are currently working closely with the women still in our care to assist them in securing appropriate alternative accommodation and support services. This includes referrals to female-specific shelters, assistance with independent accommodation opportunities, and, where possible, reintegration with family support structures.

Happy Valley remains committed to providing temporary shelter and support as a stepping stone toward recovery, stability, and reintegration away from homelessness. With homelessness continuing to rise and state funding remaining limited, we continue to rely heavily on public generosity, donations, and fundraising initiatives to help sustain our operations and meet the growing needs within the community.
