📚✨ DAY TWO: AND WHAT A BEAUTIFUL STORY WE'VE WRITTEN TOGETHER! 💚

Library lovers, WHERE DO WE EVEN BEGIN?! 🥹

Day Two of the Fish Hoek Library Literary Festival was an absolute celebration of words, voices, languages and the beautiful communities that bring them to life!

From thought-provoking panel discussions and inspiring conversations with authors to creative workshops, poetry, storytelling and little readers discovering the magic of books — our spaces were alive with literary love! 📖✨

We laughed, we listened, we learnt, we shared. We challenged perspectives, celebrated identities and reminded one another that our stories matter, no matter the language in which they're told.

And somewhere between the books, the conversations and the connections, something truly special happened: a public library became a meeting place for stories that deserved to be heard.

To every author, publisher, facilitator, storyteller, exhibitor, volunteer, partner, colleague and visitor — THANK YOU! You didn't just attend our first Literary Festival. You helped bring it to life.

What started as an idea became two unforgettable days of public library magic. And goodness, what a privilege it has been to share them with you!

Our hearts are full. Our gratitude is overflowing. And our belief in the power of libraries and community is stronger than ever.

Every Language Holds a Story. And this weekend, together, we began writing a beautiful new one. 💛

🤝📚 RECOGNIZING THE NEXT GENERATION OF STORYTELLERS! 🤝📚

We are so looking forward to announcing the winners of the Fish Hoek Library Youth Writing Competition!

See you at 12h30 when we will be joined by a special guest, CADENCE MARINUS!

Cadence Marinus is a talented young writer from Ocean View and a learner at South Peninsula High School who won the 2024 City of Cape Town Library and Information Services Writing Competition in the English 14–18 age category.

Her winning story, inspired by environmental justice, tells of her experience establishing an eco-club at school and combines powerful storytelling with a passion for making a difference.

What makes her journey even more inspiring? It was her very first writing competition! She took a chance, trusted her abilities and emerged a winner.

We're so pleased to have her joining us as we celebrate stories, creativity and community.

📚✨ DAY ONE: WHAT A BEAUTIFUL FIRST CHAPTER! 💛

Library lovers, our hearts are FULL! 🥹

Day One of the Fish Hoek Library Literary Festival was nothing short of magical!

From the incredible energy in the room to the meaningful conversations and shared experiences, today was everything we hoped for and more.

We even had visitors travelling all the way from the Northern Suburbs to join us! 🥹

While today's programme was designed with young people in mind, it became something beautifully bigger — a space for everyone who arrived with an open mind, a story to share and a willingness to learn. And goodness, did they show up with all three!

You could feel it. People came to learn, to connect, to share and to be inspired. The atmosphere was warm, the energy was infectious, and the experience was truly fruitful.

To everyone who spent part of their Friday with us, THANK YOU! You helped make our very first chapter one we'll remember for a long time.

And if today was anything to go by, TOMORROW IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING SPECIAL! 🤩📖

Day One has set the most beautiful tone, and we genuinely cannot wait to welcome everyone for our main celebration tomorrow!

🎉📖 ONE MORE DAY UNTIL THE FESTIVAL BEGINS!

Saturday promises to truly be something special and we are looking forward to welcoming library lovers from near and far to the event!

Held under the inspiring banner “Every Language Holds a Story”, the Fish Hoek Library Festival aims to celebrate the diversity of South African languages and showcase the powerful stories and voices within our local communities.

Look out for authors, publishers, panel conversations, creative workshops, poetry, storytelling, a puppet show and a range of activities for our younger bookworms.

📚✨ MEET THE AUTHOR! 📚✨

Today we're delighted to introduce Dr Glen Thompson who will join Gaireyah Fredericks in conversation with Anne Schlebusch and Consuelo Roland at THE POWER AND POLITICS OF LANGUAGE hosted by Amina Essa.

Dr Glen Thompson is a poet, scholar and surfer. He is a Research Fellow in the History Department at Stellenbosch and holds a PhD in History (University of Stellenbosch).

He lives in Cape Town and is writing a book on the history, politics and culture of surfing in South Africa. He is the co-host of The Deep Duck Dive Podcast, a hydrofeminist and critical surf studies public scholarship project.

In 2006, he co-wrote 'Txt Me: A Cellphone Affair' a stage play that was performed at the National Arts Festival Fringe. His debut poetry collection 'In the Slowness of Melting' was published by Karavan Press in 2026.

🤝📚 ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT!

This Saturday, we'll be welcoming READ TO RISE to the Fish Hoek Library Literary Festival!

Read to Rise is a South African non-profit organization passionate about inspiring a love of reading and improving literacy among children in underserved communities. Through engaging literacy initiatives, book donations and storytelling, Read to Rise helps children discover that books can open doors to imagination and the endless possibilities this brings.

We're so excited to have Read to Rise join us on Saturday where they will be bringing the magic of stories to life for our youngest library lovers in the form of the exciting OAKY THE HAPPY TREE puppet show.

Please come and check out the Kid's Corner of the exhibition space where the show will take place at 12h00 .

It's incredible to have phenomenal community organizations join us at the Fish Hoek Library Literary Festival and we can't wait to see everyone there!

📚✨ MEET THE AUTHOR! 📚✨

Today we're delighted to introduce Consuelo Roland, one of the wonderful literary voices joining us at the Fish Hoek Library Literary Festival!

Consuelo Roland is a South African fiction author with a background in the global corporate IT industry. She has previously published 'The Good Cemetery Guide,' a darkly comedic tale about a reluctant third-generation funeral director, which was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Fiction Prize and the Olive Schreiner Prize. This popular South African classic was republished by Karavan Press in 2024.

Roland's subsequent thriller/crime series, 'The Daughters of Limbo Trilogy' is published internationally by Catalyst Press and her latest novel, 'The Awakening of Paola Dante' which will be published in October 2026 features a career woman whose ordered life is turned upside down when Daniel, her crime-writer husband, disappears ‘properly.’
