WE MOURN ONE OF OUR OWN
This week, Carletonville Hospital mourns Mr Lefa Mokati, a security officer deployed at our hospital and one of the innocent victims of the tragic Wedela mass shooting.
Lefa was among the people who lost their lives when gunmen opened fire at a tavern in Wedela on 26 September. The death toll has since risen to 18.
For us, this is not simply another crime story.
It is the loss of one of our own.
Lefa served at Carletonville Hospital. He was part of the people who came to work every day to help keep our patients, staff and visitors safe.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and everyone who knew him.
But his death also leaves us with a difficult reality to confront.
The continuing violence associated with illegal mining and zama-zama activity, together with our broader challenges in preventing and responding to violent crime, is affecting communities across the West Rand.
Crime cannot become something we simply learn to live with.
This is bigger than one hospital, one community or one incident.
It requires communities, law enforcement, government, business and civil society to work together to create safer communities and to address the conditions that allow violent crime to take root.
As a healthcare institution, our first responsibility will always be to protect and care for life.
Today, however, we pause to remember a life that has been taken.
Rest in peace, Mr Mokati.
Your colleagues at Carletonville Hospital remember you.
May your family find strength, and may your life remind all of us that behind every statistic is a person, a family and a community that has lost someone who mattered.
Every life matters.
