THE LANTERN HOUSE
Episode 9: The Landlord

Day 6.
8 AM sharp.

Sara hadn’t slept.
Aunty Thandi picked them up on her way to the cafe.
"You look serious," Aunty said.
"We are," Sara said.

The house with the sign.
Small. Painted blue. Fence. Dog quiet now.

The landlord opened the door. Same woman. Headscarf. Sharp eyes.
She looked at Aunty Thandi first.
"You’re the one from the cafe?"
"Yes, ma’am," Aunty Thandi said. "These girls work for me. Hard workers. Quiet. I vouch for them."

The landlord looked at Sara. At Elisa. At the small bag.
"Come in."

Back room.
Single bed. Small table. Window. Shared bathroom outside.
Smelled like bleach and old wood.
It was perfect.

"R1200 a month," the landlord said. "Water included. Electricity you buy."
"We have R240 saved," Sara said, voice steady. "And R80 a day from work."
"Rules," the landlord cut in. "No noise. No boys. No parties. Rent due every Monday. Late = out."
"Yes, ma’am," Sara and Aunty said together.

The landlord stared a long time.
Then sighed. "R300 to move in today. R300 every Friday until we hit R1200 deposit. Then full rent."
Sara’s heart jumped. "Yes. Thank you."

Aunty Thandi pulled out R300 from her purse. "Loan," she whispered to Sara. "Pay me back R50 a week."
Sara nodded, eyes wet.

Keys. One for Sara.
"It’s yours," the landlord said. "Don’t make me regret it."

2 PM.
They moved in.
One bag. One blanket. One teddy bear. One lantern.
Sara put the lantern on the windowsill. Lit it.
The room glowed.

Elisa touched the wall. "It’s ours?"
"Ours," Sara said.
She sat on the floor and cried. Quiet.
Not from sadness. From relief.

That night, first night with a door that locks.
Sara wrote on the plan: **STEP 3: DONE**
Under it: **R0 saved. R300 debt to Aunty. But we have a room.**

She blew out the lantern.
For the first time in 6 days, she slept without one eye open.

THE LANTERN HOUSE
*Episode 8: The Room Hunt*

Day 5.
No more shelter.

6 AM. They packed their bag.
Blanket. Clothes. Bear. Lantern.
R160 saved. R80 from today coming later.

Nomusa hugged them at the door.
"You can come back for the ID help. 10 AM. Don’t disappear."
"We won’t," Sara promised.

First: Cafe.
Aunty Thandi already had the mop ready.
"Room hunt after?"
"Yes, Aunty."
"Finish fast today. I’ll ask around too."

Sara flew through the work.
Mop. Scrub. Wipe. 3 hours instead of 8.
4 PM: R80.
Total now: R240.

They walked.
Poles. Walls. Shop windows.
**ROOM TO RENT R2500**
**ROOM TO RENT R2000**
**ROOM TO RENT R1800**

Sara stopped at each one.
"Hello, I’m looking for a room. For me and my sister. I work at a cafe. I have R240 saved."
The answers were the same.
"Too young."
"Need deposit + first month."
"Need ID."
"Come back with a parent."

By 6 PM their feet hurt.
Elisa sat on a curb. "No one wants us."
"Someone will," Sara said. But her voice was small.

Last sign: **BACKROOM R1200. Water included.**
Small house. Fence. Dog barking.
A woman opened the door. Late 50s. Headscarf.
"What do you want?"
"A room. Please."
"How old?"
"16. And 10."
The woman looked them up and down. Saw the bag. Saw Elisa’s bear.
"You have money?"
"R240. And I earn R80 a day at a cafe."
The woman sighed. "It’s R1200. Deposit R600. You don’t have it."
Sara’s throat closed. "Can we pay little by little?"
"Rules are rules, child."

They walked away.
Sun going down.

Then the woman called from the gate.
"Hey!"
Sara turned.
"Come back tomorrow 8 AM. Bring Aunty from the cafe. If she says you’re good, we talk. R300 to move in. Then R300 every week until deposit is done. No parties. No trouble."
Sara couldn’t speak. Just nodded.

On the walk home to the 24-hour park bench, Elisa held her hand.
"Did that mean yes?"
"It meant maybe," Sara said. "Which is better than no."

That night, she wrote on the plan:
*ROOM: MAYBE. R300. Need Aunty Thandi.*

She held the lantern.
Not a room yet.
But a door that cracked open.

THE LANTERN HOUSE
Episode 7: The Plan

Day 4.
R80 in the bag. 1 night left in the shelter.

Sara didn’t sleep.
She sat up with a torn piece of paper from Aunty Thandi’s cafe.
Borrowed a pen from Nomusa.

At the top she wrote: **THE PLAN**

Under it:
**1. Job** - R80 x 6 days = R480 a week
**2. Save** - Food R100. Keep R380
**3. Room** - Find a room. R1500? R2000?
**4. ID** - Ask Nomusa how
**5. Home** - Our own. With a door that locks.

Elisa woke up. "What are you writing?"
"Our way out," Sara said.
She showed her the paper.
Elisa pointed at #3. "A real room?"
"A real room," Sara said. "With a bed. And a window."

7 AM. Back at the cafe.
Aunty Thandi was already there.
"Early," she said.
"We have a plan," Sara said. Then handed her the mop.

She worked harder today.
Windows until they shined. Floors until Aunty Thandi said "enough."
At 4 PM: R80 again.
Plus a tip. R20. "You left the bathroom cleaner than me," Aunty Thandi said.

Sara put R100 straight in the bag. Didn’t touch it.
Bought bread, milk, fruit. R40.
R60 left.

Back at the shelter, Nomusa called her.
"I heard you worked."
"Yes."
"Good. Come."
She took Sara to a small office. Papers everywhere.
"You need ID to get a real job. And a room. Here’s what we do. Birth certificate first. Then ID. It takes time. But we start tomorrow."

Sara nodded. Wrote it down under #4.

That night, last night in the shelter.
Sara and Elisa on their mattress.
Lantern between them. Low.

"I’m scared," Elisa whispered.
"Me too," Sara said. "But look." She showed the paper.
"We have R160 saved. We have a job. We have a plan."
Elisa touched the writing. "Step 3 is a room?"
"Step 3 is a room," Sara said. "Then we won’t have to leave at 6 AM anymore."

She blew out the lantern.
In the dark she could hear her heart.
Fast. But not afraid.

Tomorrow they leave the shelter.
But not as girls with nothing.
As girls with a job.
And a plan.

THE LANTERN HOUSE
Episode 6: The Job

Day 3 in the shelter.
7 AM sharp. Workshop in the hall.

Nomusa stood with a marker.
"Listen," she said. "No ID means no formal job. Yet. So we start small. Cash. Cleaning. Washing. Helping. Show up early. Work hard. Be honest."

Sara wrote it down on the back of a receipt.
Elisa sat next to her, swinging her feet.

8:00 AM. They walked out.
2 nights left in the shelter.

First stop: a cafe on Main Road. Glass windows. Chairs outside.
Sara took a deep breath. Pushed the door.

"Morning," she said to the woman behind the counter. "I’m looking for work. Cleaning. Dishes. Anything. I don’t have ID yet, but I’m 16 and I work."

The woman looked at Sara. Then at Elisa in the corner with her bear.
"You have somewhere to sleep?"
"Shelter. For two more nights."
The woman wiped her hands on a towel. "Floor needs mopping. Bathrooms too. Tables. R80 for the day. You start now?"

Sara nodded before she could change her mind. "Yes. Thank you."

They gave her a bucket. Mop. Gloves that were too big.
"Name?"
"Sara."
"I’m Aunty Thandi."

Elisa sat in the corner with tea and a sandwich Aunty Thandi gave her. Bear on her lap. Lantern under the chair.

Sara worked.
She mopped every tile twice.
Scrubbed toilets. Wiped tables. Took out trash.
Her arms hurt. Her back hurt.
She didn’t stop.

At 1 PM, Aunty Thandi brought food. Rice and chicken.
"Eat," she said. "Then finish."
Sara ate with her head down. The food tasted like safety.

4 PM. Time to go.
Aunty Thandi counted out R80. Cash.
Plus a plastic bag. "Leftovers. For you and your sister."

Sara’s hands shook taking it. "Thank you, Aunty."
"Come back tomorrow. 7 AM. Same pay. If you do good for 2 weeks, we talk more hours."

Outside, Sara counted the money again. R80.
She bought bread. Milk. Soap. A toothbrush for Elisa.
R28 left. She folded it and put it in the bag with the lantern.

Back at the shelter, Nomusa saw the bag.
"You worked?"
"Yes. At a cafe."
Nomusa smiled. "That’s step 2. Shelter, then job."

That night, lights out at 9.
Sara lay awake.
Day 1: done.
Day 2: go back.
Day 3: ask about more hours.
Day 14: ask about a room.

Elisa whispered, "Sara?"
"Hmm?"
"Are we going to be okay?"
Sara looked at the lantern in her bag. "We’re working now. So yes."

For the first time, the light didn’t feel like fear.
It felt like a plan.

THE LANTERN HOUSE
~Episode 5: The Shelter~

Day 2 on the street.
Sara’s shoes had holes now. Elisa’s lips were dry.

They walked all morning. Asked every shop.
"Cleaning?" "No."
"Packing?" "You’re too young."
"Please, we just need—" "Come back with an ID."

By 3 PM they sat on a bench. Empty.
Elisa put her head on Sara’s shoulder. "I’m hungry."
"I know," Sara said. Her stomach was empty too.

A security guard walked by. Stopped. Looked at the lantern in Sara’s bag.
"You girls need help?"
Sara sat up straight. "We’re okay."
"Okay people don’t sleep under bridges," he said. "St. Mary’s shelter. 2 streets that way. Line closes at 6. They don’t ask for ID."

He didn’t wait for thanks. Just walked on.

5:20 PM. They found it.
A church hall. Fluorescent lights. Rows of thin mattresses.
The smell of soup and bleach.

A woman at the door with a clipboard and tired smile.
"Names?"
"Sara. This is Elisa."
"Ages?"
"16. 10."
The woman nodded. "You can stay. 3 nights. Then we sit and make a plan. No drugs. No fighting. Lights out 9."

She handed them two blankets. Rough, but clean.
Two bowls of soup. Two slices of bread.
"Eat. Then pick a mattress. Corner is quieter."

They took the corner.
Elisa ate like she was afraid it would disappear.
Sara ate slow. Making it last.

Around them: a mom with 3 kids. An old man coughing. Teen boys sharing earphones.
No one stared. No one asked.
That was new.

After dinner the volunteer came back.
"I’m Nomusa," she said. "If you need pads, toothbrush, anything, ask me."
Sara nodded. Couldn’t speak.
Nomusa looked at the lantern on their mattress. "Keep it low at night. And keep it close."

Lights out at 9.
The hall went dark except for small torches and whispers.

Elisa curled into Sara. "Are we safe?"
"For 3 nights," Sara whispered back. "Then we figure it out."
"Will we get a house?"
Sara touched the bear in Elisa’s hands. "We’ll build one. Our own. With our own light."

She couldn’t sleep.
She listened to breathing. 20 different lives in one room.
Some crying quiet. Some snoring.

At midnight, Nomusa did rounds. Stopped at their mattress.
"You doing okay?"
Sara whispered, "Yes. Thank you."
"Tomorrow morning 7 AM. There’s a workshop. How to get jobs, documents. Come."
Then she moved on.

Sara stared at the ceiling.
Three nights.
72 hours to change everything.

It wasn’t a home. The floor was hard. The blanket was thin.
But no one shouted. No one hit.
For the first time in a long time, Elisa slept without flinching.

Sara held the lantern in her lap. Unlit.
"Step 1: Shelter."
"Step 2: Work."
"Step 3: Home."

She closed her eyes.
Tomorrow, they start climbing.

THE LANTERN HOUSE
Episode 4: The Street

Morning came fast.
"Out," Aunt Maya said. Two plastic bags by the door. "Now."

No breakfast. No "be safe."
Just the sound of the door closing.

Sara took Elisa’s hand. Grabbed the lantern. The bag. The bear.
And they walked.

The first hour they walked quiet.
Second hour, their feet hurt.
By 6 PM they were tired and hungry. And they had nowhere.

"We can’t go to a shelter," Sara said. "They need ID. We don’t have any."
Elisa just nodded. She was cold.

They found cardboard under a bridge in Cape Town.
Cars went over their heads. No one looked down.

Sara laid the jackets down. Lit the lantern low.
"This is home for tonight," she said.
Elisa crawled in close. "It’s cold."
"I know," Sara said. She put her arm around her. "But we have light."

They tried to sleep.
Every car sound made Sara sit up. Every shadow made her heart jump.

Around 3 AM, footsteps stopped.
A woman with a trolley of bottles stood there. Old coat. Tired eyes.
She looked at them. At the lantern. At Elisa holding the bear.

"You girls okay?" she asked soft.
Sara sat up, blocking Elisa. "We’re fine."
The woman didn’t argue. She just put down a bottle of water and half a loaf of bread.
"Eat," she said. "I was 16 once too. On the street."

Then she walked away. No questions. No pictures.

Elisa broke the bread in half with shaking hands.
"Who was that?"
"I don’t know," Sara said. "But that was kind."

They ate slowly. The bread was dry but it was food.
The water was cold but it helped.

Elisa fell asleep first, clutching the bear.
Sara stayed awake. Watching the road. Holding the lantern.

The night was long.
The concrete was hard.
But that woman’s 10 seconds of kindness felt bigger than everything.

Sara looked at the city lights above the bridge.
She made a promise to herself.
*We are not staying here. We are passing through.*

Morning came. Gray and cold.
Sara shook Elisa awake. "Come. We need to find work today."
Elisa rubbed her eyes. "Doing what?"
"I don’t know yet," Sara said. "But we start walking."

They packed the lantern. The bear. The half bread.
Two girls. One light. And the whole city in front of them.

The street was just the beginning....

Episode 3: The Choice

2:17 AM.
The house didn’t sleep. It just got quiet.

Sara lay on the mat staring at the ceiling. Elisa was beside her, breathing soft. But her hands were empty.

Behind the fridge was the bear.
The last thing Mom gave her.

Sara sat up. The floor was cold.
*If I get caught, we’re out.*
*If I don’t, Elisa keeps breaking.*

Choice 1: Stay quiet.
Choice 2: Fight.

She struck the match. The lantern glowed low. She crawled to the fridge. Dust on her knees. Her hand reached behind it. Cold metal. Then fabric.

She had it.

The hallway light snapped on.

"Caught you."

Casey stood in the doorway. Arms crossed. Hair messy. Smirking like she’d been waiting.
"Stealing at 2AM? Figures. Trash."

Sara stood up slowly. The bear in her fist.
"This isn’t yours."
"Nothing here is yours," Casey said. "In Maya’s house, we take what we want."

Elisa shot up from the mat. Eyes wide. She grabbed the lantern and held it between them. The light shook.

Maya’s door slammed open.
"WHAT IS IT NOW?!"
Casey’s face changed in one second.
"Auntie, Sara was in my room. She took something."

Maya looked at Sara. At the bear. At Elisa shaking.
"Give it here," Maya said, hand out.

The kitchen went still. Only the fridge hummed.
If Sara gave it, it was gone.
If she didn’t, they’d be on the street.

Sara looked down at Elisa. Ten years old. No shoes. Holding a lantern like a weapon.

Sara made her choice.

She didn’t hand it to Maya.
She got on one knee. Put the bear in Elisa’s hands.
"This belongs to my sister," Sara said. Clear. No shaking. "Not Casey. Not you. Her."

Casey laughed. Too loud.
"Oh wow. Brave."
Maya’s face went red.
"So that’s how it is? Ungrateful. After I feed you."

"We haven’t eaten since yesterday," Sara said.
"Then leave," Maya snapped. "Pack. Both of you. By morning. I’m done."

Uncle Ben didn’t come out of the room.

Elisa clutched the bear to her chest and didn’t cry.
Sara stood. Put her arm around her.
The lantern was still lit in Elisa’s other hand.

No home. No food. No plan.
But for the first time, they chose for themselves.

They went back to the mat. Didn’t sleep.
Just waited for morning.

Outside, wind hit the windows.
Inside, two girls and one light.

**WHAT NEXT?**
Morning comes. Maya means it.

THE EMPTY HOUSE

Episode 2: WHAT CASEY TAKES

The lantern was still warm in the morning.
Sara and Elisa woke up on the kitchen floor. Two jackets. One thin mat.

No breakfast on the table.
Aunt Maya was on the phone, arguing about rent.
Uncle Ben had already left for work.
Only Casey was home.

"Get up," Casey said, kicking Sara’s foot. "Maya said clean my room."
Sara sat up. "I’m not your maid."
Casey smirked. "You’re whatever I say. Trash."

Elisa went to their bag in the corner. She pulled out the only thing left from home.
A small teddy bear. One eye missing. Mom bought it for her 5th birthday.

Casey saw it.
"Ooo baby toy?" Casey grabbed it.
"Give it back," Elisa whispered.
"Make me," Casey said, holding it above her head.

Sara stood. "Casey. Give it to her."
"Or what?" Casey stepped closer. "You gonna hit me? In Maya’s house? Try it. I dare you."

Elisa’s eyes filled up. No sound. Just tears.
"Please Casey," she said. "It’s all I have."

Casey looked at the bear. Then at Elisa. Then threw it.
Not to her. At the wall.
It hit with a soft thud and slid behind the fridge.
"Oops," Casey said. "Guess it’s lost now."

"WHAT’S THAT NOISE?!" Aunt Maya yelled from her room.
Instantly Casey’s face changed. Wide eyes. Innocent voice.
"Nothing Auntie! The trash kids were fighting!"

Maya came out. Saw Sara standing. Saw Elisa crying.
"Don’t start trouble in my house," Maya snapped at Sara. "If you can’t behave, go back to the street."

Uncle Ben walked in then. Grabbed a beer from the fridge.
He didn’t look behind it. Didn’t see the bear.
"Keep it down," he said, and walked away.

Night came again.
Elisa didn’t ask for the bear. She just stared at the space behind the fridge.
Sara sat beside her.
"I’m sorry," Sara whispered. "I should’ve fought."
Elisa shook her head. "If you fight, they’ll kick us out."

Sara said nothing. She struck a match. The lantern lit.
The small light filled the dark kitchen.

Elisa leaned on her shoulder. "What do we do now?"
Sara looked at Casey’s closed door. At Maya counting money.
She didn’t know yet. But her hands weren’t shaking from fear anymore.

The bear was still behind the fridge.
And tomorrow, Sara would have to decide.
Sneak it back... or make Casey pay in front of everyone.
