The govt of Tanzania plans a 53 km commercial road across the north of the iconic Serengeti. More than 1.5 m + migrating animals will need to navigate it!

Please see INFO - We must balance the needs of both HUMAN-kind and NATURE-kind here. Fairly!

I love knowing the common migration paths used by both People. other Mamals and fish!

Maasai fury as plan to lure Arabian Gulf tourists threatens their ancestral land 31/03/2013

TANZANIA -
MAASAI vs GOVERNMENT - ancestral lands under huge threat !

The tensions have long been simmering.
To the east of the Serengeti, between the park's border and Loliondo, lies a corridor of about 1500 sq. kms, which forms part of the great migration route.

For many years, this has been 'mixed' land use - the traditional pastoralists have grazed their cattle there, whilst co-existing in a tense arrangement, with safari and hunting operators, plus the Tanzanian National Parks.

Now, the government intends to finally evict the Maasai and restrict them to 60% of the land usage they currently have. This will affect about 30 000 people.

Tanzania already has one of the highest areas of land under conservation, both in Africa and the world, so it's admirable that they wish to conserve more, formally.

HOWEVER - at what cost to the traditional people of the area who've lived in utter harmony, and been custodians of the great animal treasures for many, many centuries?

This high-handed approach by government is terribly wrong.

There HAS to be a middle ground solution.

Time to lobby harder. EAC? SADC? AU? Human rights bodies?

I know it's not Serengeti-related, but indirectly poaching affects our beloved natural icon - the Serengeti-Mara - and it is a special day after all ...

It's an UTTER PRIVILEGE to be able to formally announce today - WORLD RHINO DAY 2012 - the demo launch of Kenny D's new work in progress - "RHINO RAP" -

This is the first time ever I can recall in southern Africa - and beyond - where a dynamic, young, social justice activist has stood up for the rights of our precious wildlife, under threat - and rhino in particular - and put his/her heart into a musical context, so that our youth can identify with the scourge of poaching.

Kenesias Dambakurima - I humbly salute you, my Zim brother.
As I said when we spoke earlier today - you're a 'genius'.

Here, my Serengeti fighter-friends - is how we start to build community bridges regionally ... IMHO -

I was not on line between Sat Night and Monday morning so missed this very important announcement.

I think that this is a very encouraging and sensible announcement and one that the 60,000+ people that have worked since mid 2010 to stop the Highway and Now transport corridor and pipeline from cutting across the great Migration route between the North Serengeti and the Maasai Mara on various FB pages can now take some pride in for a job well done.

Yes Xavier and others we will stay awake and see what happens next but through us and our 1000's of friends THE WHOLE WORLD IS NOW WATCHING and ready to defend and protect and intact Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem.

Home Tanzania and Uganda have agreed that a proposed joint commercial rail track from Tanga to Arusha and Musoma and onward to Kampala, would not cut through the Serengeti national park, ending 12-months of speculation.

Tanzania conservation breaking news – Attempted denial of cross Serengeti Railway exposes yet more ‘ 30/12/2011

Thanks Again Wolfgang : " It is not an either or but a sensible compromise to be sought and implemented which leaves pristine wilderness areas intact for decades to come as a resource for wildlife based tourism, a major economic activity for Tanzania and much of the rest of East Africa. Let us not destroy what already works and works well but protect and preserve it while employing some common sense when finally deciding on where highway, railway and pipeline will be located. Not across the Serengeti if global opinion has anything to do with it. Watch this space." Blessings from Kenya

This Makes about as much sense having the New Egyptian Government
asking for Chinese Corporate help and Finance to do a feasibility study to First Bulldoze the Great Pyramids and then build on that cleared site a new Metro station and Parking Mall for the New Giza Walmart and Mall Of Egypt.
