Despite the strong winds in Isipingo today, the candles stayed lit, symbolizing hope, remembrance, and resilience. This location was the site of a roadside prayer organized by the IFP Women’s Brigade in KwaZulu-Natal, in memory of 11 individuals who tragically lost their lives in an accident, including a student. The prayer aimed to honor those who passed, provide comfort to grieving families, and seek protection for all road users.
Cllr Gail Ntshayintshayi, Chairperson of the IFP Women’s Brigade KZN, voiced serious concerns about the rising number of road accidents nationwide. She mentioned the heartbreaking incident in Vanderbijlpark, where twelve schoolchildren died following a bus collision with a truck, as well as a recent crash on the N2 near Mtubatuba that resulted in five fatalities. These devastating incidents underscore a growing crisis that requires immediate attention. Cllr Ntshayintshayi called on the Department of Transport and also relevant authorities to quickly restore roadblocks, emphasizing that increased police presence during December led to fewer road accidents. She cautioned that the current decline in law enforcement has allowed dangerous, unroadworthy vehicles to return on the roads, putting lives at risk.
The IFP Women’s Brigade KZN continues to advocate for road safety and the protection of our communities. The candles that remained lit today remind us that even in the face of fierce winds, hope and the imperative to save lives must not be snuffed out.
