iKhaya LikaBaba is a children’s home with the vision to see the children grow to maturity physical

iKhaya LikaBaba is a children’s home located in Zululand just South of Empangeni, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. iKhaya was founded as a home for abandoned babies but has transitioned to be a children’s home with a vision to see our children grow to maturity physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Being located among farmlands on the campus of Solid Ground Church, iKhaya is blessed with wonderful and secure gardens for the children to play. They also have access to the church’s facilities including an indoor sports centre. As part of their spiritual and emotional growth the children attend church on Sundays. Solid Ground has a dynamic Children’s Church program for children from 3 years and older. Although our children have been the victims of poverty and/or HIV/AIDS they need not be the victims of life so we strive to give them the safety, security and love that every child deserves and desire to see them all grow to become effective and stable contributors to society. We do this by providing excellent housing facilities and the love and affection of caregivers and volunteers who pour out as much love as they can into the lives of the children. Despite the circumstances from which the children come, iKhaya is a happy place filled with the joyful activity and voices of loving children.

💙 Every Voice Matters 💙

Communication is so much more than words. It is connection, choice, belonging, and being understood.

Recently, we were privileged to host a volunteer Speech Therapist who spent time working with one of our children, D. Although D is nonverbal, his potential shines brightly. Through learning basic sign language, he quickly discovered new ways to express himself and participate more fully in everyday life.

Even more exciting, D was encouraged to begin making his very first sounds. Through patient guidance, practice, and support, he embraced every opportunity to learn. His enthusiasm, engagement, and determination were remarkable to see.

Moments like these remind us that progress is not always measured in giant leaps. Sometimes it is a new sign, a first sound, or the confidence to keep trying. These small breakthroughs are life-changing milestones that open doors to communication, connection, and greater independence.

We are incredibly grateful to the volunteers who share their skills and hearts with our children. Together, we are helping every child find their voice, in whatever form that voice may take. 💙

School prizegiving was special as "Mr S" received his trophies for overall progress in Grade 3! 🌟

His house mom, Aunty Tricia, shared how proud she felt watching him do so well, and how happy he was receiving his awards. 🥹❤️ These are the moments that make all the hard work worthwhile!

Every child deserves to be encouraged, supported and given the opportunity to reach their full potential. Behind every achievement is a child who is growing in confidence, a team cheering them on, and a family that celebrates every step forward.

⚽🌟 Playball Fun in Full Swing! 🌟⚽

What a busy few weeks of learning, laughing, moving and growing at Playball! Our little champions have been putting their bodies and minds to work while having loads of fun along the way! 😃

🐻🦀 From bear walks and crab walks to walking on their heels and tiptoes, our warm-ups got everyone moving and ready for action.

🌈 The children loved our colourful coordination challenges:
👣 Picking up pegs with their toes and hopping to the matching bucket
🐛 Mastering the inchworm walk to build strength and flexibility
⚽ Balancing bean bags on their feet and matching colours
🏃‍♂️ Racing against their friends, building confidence and sportsmanship

And the fun didn't stop there!

👀 "I See!" had everyone hopping like kangaroos, jumping like frogs, walking like dogs and stomping like bears.

🎯 Our Playball stars also worked on:
✅ Fine motor skills ✅ Core strength and balance ✅ Hand-eye coordination
✅ Concentration and focus ✅ Gross motor development

💛 Every week we see our children becoming stronger, braver, more coordinated and more confident. It is such a joy to watch them grow through play.

🌱 At iKhaya, we know that every hop, jump, crawl and throw is helping to build important skills for healthy development and future learning.

💙 Well done to all our Playball superstars! We can't wait to see what adventures next week's lessons will bring.

🧵✨ Tiny beads. Big skills. ✨🧵

It might look like play, but so much learning is happening with every bead threaded!

As little fingers carefully pick up, hold, and thread each bead, children are developing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, patience, and problem-solving abilities. These are all important building blocks for future learning, including writing, reading, and everyday independence.

Most importantly, our children are having fun while growing their confidence one bead at a time. 💙

At iKhaya LikaBaba, we know that early childhood development starts long before a child takes their first steps. That's why we encourage tummy time for our babies every day.

What may look like simple play is actually building strength, coordination, and confidence. Each head lift, stretch, and push helps develop the muscles needed for rolling, sitting, crawling, and eventually walking. 👶💛

A heartfelt thank you to Dee and Janice of Levi's Spiral Chips and Corn Dogs for choosing to celebrate Dee's birthday by investing in the lives of our children. The delicious corn dogs and spiral chips were enjoyed with excitement and gratitude, bringing joy, smiles, and a sense of being loved and remembered. At iKhaya, our children aren’t just learning to help; they’re discovering the joy of taking ownership and caring for their space. They eagerly assist in making up the baby cots and tidying their own beds, each one standing a little taller with pride.

While these chores seem small, they build confidence, responsibility, and a deep sense of home. When a child learns that they can contribute, they also learn that they matter, and that their effort brings comfort, order, and love to those around them.

This is how we grow leaders: one made‑up bed, one helping hand, one act of care at a time.
