Harris, a male mountain bongo from Houston Zoo, arrived in Taiwan on 27 October to support Taipei Zoo’s conservation breeding programme. Native to Kenya’s mountain forests, mountain bongos are classified as Critically Endangered.

The three-year-old will undergo at least a month of quarantine before gradually being introduced to his new surroundings and companions. His arrival brings a male to Taipei Zoo’s existing female group, supporting efforts to sustain the population in human care.

With EVA Air providing transport, the transfer puts international cooperation into practice: zoos sharing expertise and coordinating animal care to help safeguard an African species facing severe pressures in the wild.

Taiwan’s AI Disaster Assistants Speed Up Firefighting Water Support and Quake Damage Screening 🚒🏠

Taiwan’s National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering presented three AI disaster-response applications on 20 October. Its POSEIDON assistant has supported water coordination for over 3,000 fire incidents since February, bringing emergency water-pressure support forward by more than six minutes on average.

For earthquake response, the centre and National Taiwan University’s civil engineering department trained a model using 8,000 photographs of damaged building components. It provides damage-level suggestions within one second to assist engineers. A free public tool is also planned, allowing residents to upload photographs of beams, columns and walls for preliminary screening.

These applications put AI to work on practical safety needs. AI supports decisions; building safety still requires professional assessment.

Taiwan’s Xiao Xiang-wen Defends Asian Para Games Taekwondo Gold 🥇

Taiwan’s Xiao Xiang-wen won a second consecutive Asian Para Games title on 19 October, securing Taiwan’s first gold of the Aichi–Nagoya Games in the men’s K44 under-58kg taekwondo event.

He defeated his Uzbek opponent in straight rounds, winning 8–2 and 18–6. The result followed an injury-disrupted season: an injury in April had prevented him from training normally for two months.

Xiao credited coach Wu Yen-ni’s guidance with helping him regain confidence. Having defended the title he won in Hangzhou, he now sees this victory as an important confidence boost as he works towards the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

Taiwan Researchers Reveal How Cell Arrangement Can Halt Waves of Cell Death 🔬

Taiwan’s Academia Sinica has revealed how the density and alignment of cells can guide—and sometimes block—the spread of ferroptosis, a form of cell death driven by lipid oxidation. The study was published in Cell on 15 October.

Led by Sheng-Hong Chen, the team combined live-cell imaging, genetic experiments and mathematical simulations. In cultured human epithelial cells, densely packed, orderly regions were more resistant and could form boundaries that stopped advancing waves of cell death.

The findings offer a new way to investigate collective cell death in development, injury and disease. Whether the same mechanisms operate in animal tissues and the human body still requires further research.
