Know what your vote does on 4 November

Some candidates in Overstrand are campaigning as "independents".
They are not.
They are standing for a registered party, the Organic Humanity Movement (OHM), and that party has a ranked PR list.

Why does this matter?
🗳️ Ward ballot: if their candidate wins your ward, that person becomes your councillor.

🗳️ PR ballot: your vote goes into one pool for the whole of Overstrand. Any seat it earns goes to the person at the top of the party's list, not to the person on the poster in your street.
And if their candidate does not win your ward, your ward vote still counts toward that same party total.

So you may vote for a neighbour you know and trust, and help seat someone from another town, with different priorities, whom you never chose.

If that person steps down, the seat simply passes to the next name on the list. Think carefully about whether you are willing to vote for someone you don't know, because that is effectively what this could mean.

A true independent has no party and no PR list.

Before you vote, ask every candidate two questions:
Which party are you registered under?

Who is number one on your PR list?

You deserve to know who aims to sit in Council in your name.

If you are unsure, contact the IEC (Electoral Commission of South Africa). They can explain how PR seats are allocated and tell you who is number one on any party's list

The Overstrand team is out and about. Door to door, Info tables and on the street supporting our voters to register with the IEC.

🗳 What is a SPECIAL VOTE

For the 2026 Local Government Elections, special votes are an option:

1. A HOME VISIT

If you are unable to leave your home because of illness, disability or pregnancy
- an IEC official visits you at home. Members of each party may be present.
- 2 or 3 November (IEC will inform you of the day they will come to your home)

2. A STATION VISIT

If you will be away from your voting station on Election Day
- because of work, travel or another approved reason.
- if you are elderly or have mobility challenges.
-2, 3 and 4 November at the voting station.

Contact your Ward Councillor or Branch to make sure you are registered.
