This bull, born November 2022, in his working clothes. Herded every day at approximate densities of 700-1000 animals per hectare, and kraaled every night. The photo of him is in June 2026. Rubbervale Rockies Herd genetics 🧬 focused on adaptability and fertility. Not all cattle are equal.

The aftermath from a herd bunched together, hooves mulching and trampling leaf litter into the soil where it belongs. The missing link, I believe, in mopane woodland.

Addressing the real reason of the lack of grass in mopane. Continuous selective grazing and the consequent bottle neck in the nutrient cycle. Mopane actually has exceptional grass, add to that the high protein level of the leaves, and this habitat has very high yield late in the season.

Herding might currently be disputed as a science. Even a real job, but it is an art. Manipulating a group of animals to create maximum benefits from herd effect, and putting weight on them is not something anyone can do. Tight bunches, movement and intake. Achieved by low stress animal handling skills and adapted genetics.

One of the drivers of healthy rangelands. Grazing. Plants die if they don’t get grazed. Fire 🔥 is then used to rectify the mismanagement. Continuous selective grazing is the great killer. Add fire to solve the problem, and degradation is an outcome. The solution? Herd effect and non-selective grazing with adequate recovery. A management herd/flock from appropriate genetic material and a grazing plan.

There is more happening here than meets the eye of the casual observer. These animals, herded as they are and grazed to a plan, act as a biological multipliers. Used to increase grass and keep it healthy. Help break hard capping on soil and cover soil. Concentrate both urine and dung. The ultimate tool to rehabilitate and regenerate wildlife habitat.

Living alongside wildlife is as normal to some folks as it is to other to order groceries through 60sixty.
The first picture depicts a wound left after wild dog attacked this cow. The second is a hippo track in a foot path used by people, lastly, through the shadow of the mopane canopy one can se the herds’ prints on an elephant track. Co-existence is not new.
