FROM TOKYO TO JOBURG | TURNING GLOBAL INSIGHT INTO LOCAL IMPACT

Day Two placed Johannesburg at the centre of a critical conversation about who benefits from the world’s growing creative economy.

Director of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Vuyisile Mshudulu, contributed to “$1.7 Trillion and Counting: Reshaping the Creative Economy”, alongside cultural leaders from Kuala Lumpur, Makati and São Paulo. He brought Johannesburg’s perspective to the table, advocating for creative economies that recognise informal cultural work, protect creators’ intellectual property and ensure artists share in the value their talent generates.

Deputy Director Ntshuxeko Manganye continued her Global Fellowship engagements, strengthening relationships with cultural policy leaders from cities around the world.

The value for Joburg lies in what returns with our delegation, international partnerships, stronger policy thinking and practical approaches to accessibility, cultural infrastructure, artist development and sustainable creative livelihoods. These insights will help strengthen the City’s arts, culture and heritage offering, including the continued growth of Arts Alive Joburg.

DAY TWO IN TOKYO | JOHANNESBURG IN THE GLOBAL CULTURAL CONVERSATION 🌍🇿🇦

The City of Johannesburg continued its participation at the 15th World Cities Culture Summit, engaging with cultural leaders on how cities can use arts, culture and heritage to advance inclusion, wellbeing and sustainable creative economies.

Deputy Director of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Ntshuxeko Manganye, joined fellow cultural leaders in a dedicated Global Fellowship session focused on cultural-policy leadership and international collaboration. The wider programme examined the role of the arts in public health, the growth of the creative economy and the need to expand visibility and opportunity for artists with disabilities.

Johannesburg’s presence ensures that the perspectives and realities of African cities help shape global cultural policy, while bringing valuable knowledge, partnerships and practical ideas home to strengthen the City’s cultural programmes, including Arts Alive Joburg.

DAY ONE IN TOKYO | WORLD CITIES CULTURE SUMMIT

The City of Johannesburg’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Directorate joined cultural leaders from across the world for the opening of the 15th World Cities Culture Summit in Tokyo.

Representing Johannesburg were Director of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Vuyisile Mshudulu, and Deputy Director of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Ntshuxeko Manganye, who is participating as one of 20 cultural leaders selected for the Global Fellowship.

From affordable creative spaces and responsible cultural tourism to inclusive city making and culture’s influence across borders, Day One examined how cities can place creativity closer to the centre of urban development. Visits to the newly reopened Edo Tokyo Museum and encounters with Tokyo’s artists and musicians further demonstrated how heritage, contemporary expression and public institutions can work together to shape a city’s identity.

These conversations connect directly with Johannesburg’s cultural priorities. Through Arts Alive Joburg, the City continues to support multidisciplinary programming, develop creative talent, connect communities with cultural experiences and strengthen the role of arts and heritage in building an inclusive, vibrant city.

Johannesburg is in Tokyo to exchange knowledge, build partnerships and translate global learning into meaningful local action for our artists, audiences and communities.
