Clarification on POWA executive leadership and recent public statement

POWA would like to address concerns arising from recent comments made by Mary Makgaba on her personal page regarding the Zimbabwean man who threatened to shoot and murder women at a Johannesburg restaurant. These comments do not reflect the ethos, values, or principles of POWA, and we believe it is important to provide clear and accurate information to the public.

Following several social media interactions, we have also noted a misunderstanding suggesting that Mary Makgaba is still the Executive Director of POWA. We wish to clarify that Mary Makgaba left POWA in 2022 and has not held any leadership position within the organisation since her departure.

POWA is currently led by Fatima Shaik, who serves as our Executive Director and is responsible for guiding the organisation’s strategic direction, programmes, and advocacy efforts. Her leadership reflects POWA’s commitment to human rights, gender equality, and the protection and empowerment of women.

As an organisation dedicated to transparency and accountability, we believe it is essential to ensure that our stakeholders and the broader community have accurate information about our leadership and values.

Kind regards
POWA
