πŸ’™πŸ“š Get to Know Your Library: A Place to Learn and Thrive

For one Grade 12 learner from Ennerdale Secondary, Louisa Prince Public Library became more than a place to study β€” it helped open the door to her future.
Without data or a quiet study space at home, she visited the library daily after school to use the free Wi-Fi, access matric past papers and receive homework assistance. With support in research skills and online university applications, she passed matric with a Bachelor's pass and is now studying at the University of Johannesburg. πŸŽ“βœ¨

She still returns to the library and says, β€œThis library changed my life.”
Stories like hers show how a library can be a supportive space for learners, job seekers, families and the wider community. The busiest hours are after school, when young people come to study, access resources and work towards their goals.
Have you ever had an experience at a library that made a difference in your life? Share your story below! πŸ’¬πŸ“–

The Department of Employment and Labour, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg Libraries Region E, hosted a community outreach at Altrec Sport Centre in Eastbank, Alexandra, connecting unemployed young people and job seekers with career and employment opportunities.

The exhibition brought together stakeholders including NYDA, FNB, Services SETA, Central Johannesburg College, City of Johannesburg Social Development, One Direct Source and African Global Skills Academy to share information about available resources, career pathways, skills development and entrepreneurship. πŸ€πŸ“š

By connecting job seekers with support services and opportunities, the initiative encouraged young people to explore different career paths, enter the labour market and consider becoming entrepreneurs. πŸ’‘πŸ’™

πŸ“šπŸ€ Connecting ECD Centres with Books at Malvern Library!

Malvern Library, in collaboration with Rhodes Park Library, Social Development and heads of Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in the Eastern Cluster, conducted a library membership drive to promote access to books and reading resources.

The initiative introduced ECD representatives to block loan membership, which allows participating centres to borrow books from Joburg Libraries to support early learning and encourage a love of reading among young children. πŸ“–πŸ’™

By bringing books closer to young learners, libraries and ECD centres can work together to build strong reading foundations from an early age. πŸŒ±πŸ“š

πŸŽ“πŸ“š Helping Grade 9 Learners Plan Their Future at Princess High School!

Wilropark Community Library partnered with Princess High School to host a Career Guidance Workshop aimed at helping Grade 9 learners make informed decisions about subject choices and future careers.

Representatives from FNB, Southwest Gauteng College, Roodepoort Record Newspaper and COJ e-Learning shared valuable career and educational guidance. Learners also discovered free digital resources and online learning opportunities, as well as how library membership can connect them to a wealth of information. πŸ’»πŸ“–

Region C LIS Assistant Director David Raolane encouraged learners to consider librarianship as a career, highlighting its benefits and the institutions where they can study the discipline.

The workshop also included an educational quiz with prizes from COJ e-Learning and recognition for the best-performing Grade 9 learner for the third term. 🌟

By connecting learners with information, resources and career opportunities, Joburg Libraries continues to support young people as they shape their futures. πŸ’™
