New crew orientation recently took place to prepare team members for operational duties aboard the Pride of Limpopo.

The two-day programme covered the operational requirements of the service, aircraft and equipment familiarisation, checklists and standard operating procedures. Practical sessions focused on equipment setup, patient loading and the processes required to operate safely and effectively. Ensuring every crew member understands the aircraft, equipment and operational expectations is an important part of maintaining consistency and operational readiness.

ROCKET 4 back at Rand Airport following the completion of an inter-hospital transfer of a polytrauma patient from a facility in the Free State to a specialist facility in Gauteng for definitive care.

Patients with multiple traumatic injuries often require coordinated access to specialist services and resources. This retrieval enabled the patient to progress to the next stage of trauma management, with the HEMS team providing ongoing critical care throughout the transfer. With the patient handed over to the receiving team, ROCKET 4 returns to base ready for the next activation.

Pediatric trauma requires careful assessment and management, with consideration given to the unique needs of a growing patient. Access to specialist services, appropriate equipment and experienced clinicians is essential when managing complex injuries. This retrieval supports the patient’s transition to the next stage of care, where further specialist assessment and treatment can continue.

FLIGHT CRITERIA SERIES #03
PROGRESSIVENESS

Is the patient’s condition deteriorating, and how rapidly?

Progressiveness assesses changes in the patient’s physiology, the anticipated rate of deterioration and the risk of further clinical compromise. Early identification of a worsening condition supports timely resource allocation and helps establish whether HEMS can provide meaningful benefit to the patient.

ROCKET 4 captured departing Mediclinic Sandton following their International Trauma Day event.

Trauma care extends beyond the treatment of injuries in hospital. Prevention, preparedness, rapid assessment and effective coordination between emergency services all contribute to how patients are managed following a traumatic event. Events such as these provide an opportunity to strengthen professional relationships, share knowledge and recognise the collective role each discipline plays in trauma care.

Maternal and neonatal care remains a vital part of South Africa’s healthcare system. Access to specialised services, appropriate equipment and timely clinical interventions can make a significant difference to outcomes for both mother and child. Aeromedical retrieval helps connect patients with the level of care they need, supporting the journey from the referring facility to specialist services.
