Felidae Centre Felidae Centre started in 2010 when we saved our first two animals, the cheetah, Thato and the caracal, Lilo. All lions are saved from canned hunting.
(267)

The centre has only blossomed since and we have saved and released big and small species. We now provide a safe home for more than 60 animals. We are a rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary who takes pride in saving all animals that are indigenous to South Africa but our main focus are predators. We provide these species with a safe home and when needed a forever home. At Felidae Centre we do normal and adventure tours to educate the public about our animals and show what we do to save and conserve them. Here you will get amazing photo opportunities of our different species. Further we explain about canned hunting and why we are completely against it. NORMAL TOUR

🦁🌳 Playtime, mischief & a little bit of chaos! 😍🐾

When you’re a young lion, every day is an adventure! 💛

Our young boy and his sister decided that an ordinary play session simply wasn’t enough… so the chasing began, the excitement grew, and before long, they were chasing each other right up into the tree! 🌳😂

At his age, he is full of curiosity, playful energy and an endless desire to explore everything around him. But don’t let that innocent face fool you… this little boy has a seriously mischievous side! 😉🦁

Growing up with a sister means having a built-in playmate, a wrestling partner and, sometimes, your very own partner in crime! ❤️

These precious moments remind us that even our magnificent lions have a playful side, full of personality, curiosity and those cheeky little antics that keep us entertained every day. 🐾💛

Who do you think started the trouble… him or his sister? 😂👇

🖤🐆 Playtime with Shadow, our beautiful black leopard!

Who says big cats don’t enjoy the simple things in life? 😍 Today, our gorgeous girl Shadow was taking it easy, relaxing in her enclosure and having a little fun with a stick!

🧐 Did you know? Black leopards are not a separate species. Their dark coat is caused by a genetic condition called melanism, which results in an increased amount of dark pigment in their fur. Look closely, and you can still see the beautiful rosette patterns hidden beneath Shadow’s dark coat! 🖤

Like other leopards, Shadow is naturally curious and uses her paws, teeth and sharp senses to investigate objects in her environment. Simple objects can provide mental stimulation and encourage natural behaviours such as exploring, pawing and playing.

At Felidae Centre, we love seeing our animals express their natural instincts and personalities. Every little moment gives us another glimpse into what makes these magnificent cats so special! 🐾

Isn’t Shadow absolutely stunning? 😍🖤

🐆 SISTERS, PLAYTIME & A LITTLE ATTITUDE! 🖤💛

Tequila, our beautiful African leopard, was enjoying a peaceful, relaxing afternoon… until her sister Shadow, our gorgeous black leopard, decided to join the scene! 😍

What started as a playful little moment between sisters quickly turned into a growl or two! 😂🐆 Because even leopard sisters have their limits, and sometimes a little sisterly love comes with a side of attitude!

Two stunning leopards, two different coats, and enough personality to keep us entertained. 🖤✨

At Felidae Centre, every moment reminds us that our animals are individuals, each with their own personalities, behaviours and boundaries. And just like any sisters, Tequila and Shadow know how to keep things interesting! ❤️

🦁 INSTINCT NEVER FORGETS… EVEN WHEN BORN IN CAPTIVITY. 🐗

Today, we witnessed something truly powerful in our wild pride at Felidae Centre. Our two lionesses successfully hunted a warthog, giving us a remarkable glimpse into the natural instincts that remain within these magnificent predators. ❤️‍🔥

⚠️ A sensitive video to watch, but also an incredible educational moment.

What makes this encounter so fascinating is that these lions were born in captivity, yet their natural hunting instincts are still very much alive. Hunting is not simply something lions learn from their mothers in the wild; it is also influenced by instinct, practice, opportunity and the behaviour of their pride.

Today, it was the two females who made the successful catch. And, as lion social dynamics often go, the three males each walked away with a piece of their meal, while the hardworking lionesses were left with the taste of their achievement! 🦁😉

In the wild, hunting is essential for survival, and lionesses often play a leading role in bringing down prey. However, every hunt is different, and success depends on teamwork, timing, opportunity and the circumstances.

At Felidae Centre, moments like these remind us that these are still wild animals, guided by powerful natural instincts, regardless of where they were born.

We respect their nature, understand their behaviour, and never forget that behind their beauty lies the strength and instinct of an apex predator.

Nature isn’t always easy to watch, but it is always worth understanding. 🌍❤️

What do you find most fascinating about lions, their teamwork, their instincts, or the complex social dynamics within a pride?

🦁❤️ 18 YEARS OF BROTHERHOOD, LOVE & LION-SIZED CUDDLES! ❤️🦁

Meet our handsome boys, Rubicon & Brutus! 🥹💛

At 18 years old, these two gentlemen have earned the right to spend their afternoons relaxing side by side, enjoying the sunshine, and reminding us that even the kings of the animal kingdom have a soft side. 🦁☀️

And just when we thought they couldn’t get any sweeter, they started sharing cuddles and kisses, because some bonds are simply unbreakable! 😘🐾 There’s something truly special about watching two brothers who have shared so much of life together still showing affection in their own beautiful way.

🧡 Did you know? Lions are highly social cats that live in family groups called prides. Close bonds between related males can play an important role in their social lives, and moments like these give us a glimpse into the softer side of these powerful animals.

Here at Felidae Centre, we believe every animal has a story worth sharing. Through our guided tours and volunteer experiences, you can learn more about the individual personalities, fascinating behaviour, and unique stories of the lions in our care.

Because sometimes, the most unforgettable wildlife moments aren’t about a mighty roar or a powerful king, they’re about two old brothers sharing a little love. ❤️🦁

Would you look at these two and tell us that lions don’t have a soft side? 😍👇

🐆✨ TEQUILA — OUR QUEEN OF POSING ✨🐆 Some leopards are masters of camouflage…
and then there’s Tequila, who seems to believe the whole world is her photoshoot! 😍📸

Rolling in the grass, stretching out, looking straight into the camera and then casually changing poses, this beautiful girl certainly knows how to work the lens. ❤️

But beneath those stunning spots is a fascinating predator. Leopards are incredibly adaptable cats, using their powerful bodies, sharp claws and excellent eyesight to navigate a wide variety of habitats. Their spotted coats help break up their outline, making them remarkably difficult to see when they choose to disappear into their surroundings.

At Felidae Centre, Tequila gets to enjoy her space, explore, relax and simply be a leopard and on days like this, she clearly decides that posing is the activity of the day! 🐆🌿

Swipe through to meet all of Tequila’s best angles… because apparently, one photo is never enough when you’re this beautiful! 😍

When the king comes walking towards you… you know something special is about to happen. 🦁❤️

Valentino, our dominant male, slowly made his way towards our open vehicle, getting closer and closer as our volunteers sat quietly watching in awe.

And then, as he reached the rest of his pride, he joined them for their meal, right in front of our vehicle! 🦁🦁🦁

Imagine sitting safely in an open vehicle, surrounded by volunteers, watching an entire pride of lions eating just metres away. The sounds, the presence and the sheer size of these magnificent animals is something you never forget.

This is more than just seeing lions. It’s experiencing them. ❤️

And this is just one of the unforgettable moments our volunteers can experience at Felidae Centre. 🐾

At 18 years old, Rubicon has reached that stage of life where even a YAWN can make you tired! 🤣🦁💤

After all, when you’ve lived 18 years as a lion, you’ve earned the right to take life slowly. ❤️

Rubicon may be one of our older boys, but he still has that unmistakable presence of a true king. 👑🦁

Sometimes you don’t need to do much… just yawn, stretch, and let everyone admire you. 😂

🌧️🐾 When the rain turns the Karoo into a playground… meet Daizy! 💦

Our beautiful serval girl Daizy absolutely loves investigating what the rain leaves behind. Today, the puddles became her entertainment as she carefully searched through the wet ground, looking for something interesting to play with, sniff out… or maybe even eat! 😍

Servals are naturally curious and highly skilled hunters. In the wild, they spend a lot of time exploring their surroundings, using their incredible hearing and sense of smell to detect small prey hidden in grass, soil and vegetation. After rain, the environment changes completely, new scents appear, insects become active and little opportunities for exploration are everywhere. 🌿👃🐭

For us at Felidae Centre, moments like this are exactly why enrichment is so important. It doesn’t always have to be something complicated or expensive. Sometimes a little rain, a puddle and a curious serval are all you need to create an exciting afternoon. ❤️

Watching Daizy investigate every little puddle reminds us that enrichment is about encouraging the animals to explore, think, search and behave naturally.

And judging by that face… Daizy definitely thinks the rain was a pretty good idea! 😂💦🐾
