PROGRESS MEETING ON THE PETRUSBURG WASTE TO GAS PROJECT

Letsemeng Local Municipality held a progress meeting on the Waste to Gas Project planned for implementation in Petrusburg, marking a further step towards advancing sustainable waste management, alternative energy generation and local economic development.

The project takes the form of a Public Private Partnership between the National Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Letsemeng Local Municipality and Ranji Energy. The partnership brings together public sector coordination and private sector expertise to advance the project for the benefit of the community.

This initiative emanates from the Executive Committee (EXCO) resolution of 22 May 2025 and the Council resolution of 30 May 2025. The progress meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to translate these resolutions into implementation.

The engagement provided an opportunity to review progress, discuss implementation requirements and identify matters requiring further attention among the partners.

The Waste to Gas Project seeks to convert suitable waste into a useful energy resource. Subject to the final project design and feasibility assessments, its anticipated benefits include:

* Improved waste management: Reducing the volume of suitable waste requiring disposal and contributing to cleaner surroundings.
* Alternative energy: Producing gas that could support energy needs and diversify available energy sources.
* Job creation and skills development: Creating potential employment opportunities during construction and operation, supported by training and skills transfer.
* Opportunities for local businesses: Supporting potential participation in waste collection, transport, maintenance and related services.
* Environmental benefits: Promoting responsible waste treatment and potentially reducing emissions associated with unmanaged waste.
* Local economic development: Attracting investment into Petrusburg and supporting an economy that recovers value from waste.

Through this partnership, the Municipality seeks to address waste management challenges while opening opportunities for sustainable development and community benefit.

The partners will continue to advance the necessary technical, financial, environmental and implementation processes. Further updates on confirmed milestones, community participation and implementation arrangements will be communicated as the project develops.
