Who gets the report after your fire equipment has been serviced?

Before year-end diaries fill up, check who receives the records, arranges any follow-up work and keeps track of the next service.

Make sure someone else knows where those records are kept too. When the usual contact is on leave, their colleague should be able to find out what’s been done and what still needs attention.

Turning a spare office into a storeroom can solve a space problem quite quickly. It also changes what’s kept in that room and how people use it.

Include changes like that when you review your fire protection, along with new machinery, extra stock or alterations to shelving. They can be easy to overlook once everyone has settled into the new arrangement.

A fire risk assessment takes account of how the premises are being used now.

What would you ask the storeroom team to change here?

There’s a sprinkler above the shelves. Have a look at the space around it and tell us what you would flag.

“It does that all the time.”

That’s a worrying response to a fire alarm.

Repeated nuisance alarms are frustrating, especially when they keep interrupting work. People can start waiting to see whether anyone else reacts before doing anything themselves.

Report recurring alarms to whoever manages the system so the cause can be investigated. In the meantime, take every alarm seriously and follow your workplace’s emergency procedure.

A green pressure gauge can look reassuring when you walk past an extinguisher. You still need to know when it was last serviced.

The gauge shows pressure. It cannot confirm the condition of every component or whether the extinguisher is suitable for the area where it’s installed.

Check the service record as well. If you can’t tell when the next service is due, ask your service provider.

A fire door is propped open, boxes are narrowing the passage, and a new colleague hasn’t been shown the evacuation route.

If the alarm sounds, the team has several problems to manage at once.

These are things you can pick up during an ordinary walk through the building. Check that fire doors aren’t being propped open, arrange for misplaced stock to be moved safely, and make sure new staff know the evacuation arrangements.

Bring anything unresolved to the next team meeting and agree who will follow it up.

When a fire-safety technician visits, mention the things you’ve been meaning to ask about.

Perhaps a hose reel is awkward to reach during a busy shift, or a sign is difficult to see from the shop floor. Your team knows how the building is used every day, and those details are useful.

Walk through the space together. Show the technician what has changed and point out anything that has been causing concern. It’s a good opportunity to get questions answered while you’re looking at the equipment together.

A delivery trolley gets parked in front of the hose reel while everyone unpacks. Someone takes a phone call, another delivery arrives, and the trolley is still there at lunchtime.

It’s an easy situation to get into when work gets busy. Decide where deliveries should wait so they don’t end up in front of fire equipment or across an exit route.

Have a look at your nearest hose reel today. Could you reach it without moving anything first?

Some rooms contain equipment you cannot simply replace tomorrow.

Server rooms, MCC cabinets and other critical spaces need fire protection designed around what is actually inside them.

Gas suppression systems are designed to control or extinguish fire within protected areas, with the appropriate solution selected according to the application, risk and assets being protected.

Cease Fire Africa designs, supplies, installs and maintains gas suppression systems as part of its detection and suppression offering.

The fire risk assessment is finished. Now what?

The useful part starts when the findings become priorities your business can actually act on.

That could mean correcting an access problem, reviewing signage, addressing housekeeping, investigating a protection gap or planning maintenance around a system that needs attention.

A report should not disappear into a folder.

Cease Fire Africa conducts site inspections and provides practical recommendations to help businesses identify fire risks, improve preparedness and support compliance.

Need a clearer picture of the fire risks across your premises?
